In this class, students will learn helpful ways in which they can better proofread and edit their own writing in 4th and 5th grade. The order of our class will go as follows: 1: I will first give a short talk on what we can do to become better editors of our writing, but also what NOT to do! 2: I will share my screen with students and show them how I proof and edit one of my own writing pieces that needs a bit of work to provide a visual example to them that supports what we talked about in the opening of class. 3: Students will edit the handouts that I will provide 24 hrs before class time. They will be given 5-10 minutes during class to edit these pieces on their own, using the skills they have learned in the first part of class (they will each have identical pieces). Then I will screen share the same handout and they can check to see if they caught all the mistakes. 4: Students will also learn that while some grammatical editing is black and white, there is a gray area of proofreading and editing that depends on the editor and their interpretation. We will practice looking at a poorly written sentence and then students will each separately rewrite the sentence in a way that they think sounds better. Those who wish to share their re-written sentences can so that we can see the variety of options available. I can’t wait to get writing with you! I am currently (and have been for the past three years) a 5th grade teacher! I love to teach my students how to become better writers! I have been a creative writer since I could hold a pen! I earned a Bachelor of Science in English from Towson University in 2004 with a focus in writing. I earned a Certificate in Graphic Design from Montgomery College in 2009. I've worked on numerous marketing teams during my professional career at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University. After leaving these positions, I began my own graphic design business, combining writing and digital art for numerous small businesses and non-profit organizations. A few years after beginning my business, I took on a job as Marketing Director for Hagan Realty in Rockville, MD, both designing and writing the material we used to market the properties we were selling (both in print and online). I have had experience working at a small publishing company with their writing, editing, and design of print and digital material. Over my years of experience, I have learned that you can be a good writer in the sense that you have a good story to tell or you communicate your ideas well. However, if your writing is full of spelling and grammatical errors, it will not be taken seriously and your readers will focus on your mistakes, rather than what you are trying to communicate. I will share some of the mistakes I've made in my own profession, due to simple spelling and grammatical errors, to show the students that our goal should always be, "Edit, edit, and then edit again!" Let's practice the art of good writing! I can't wait to help you!

受講に必要なもの
I will provide a handout 24 hrs prior to the state of class. Students should either print it out and have a pen or pencil or they can use a separate electronic device on which they can edit the PDF. It would be easier to print this handout however as we will be marking it up!

Hello!
My name is Katie Fleming and I’m so excited to meet and help your child with their educational goals!
I'm a 5th grade teacher at a private school. I teach math, science, English, history, geography, reading, and spelling. I specialize in ELA.
In the classroom, students who lag behind and students who are advanced have a disadvantage because there is only one teacher and limited time. As a product of homeschool education (1st-12th) myself, who then excelled in college and beyond, I know that small classrooms and individual student-focused teaching is necessary to truly help every student excel. Everyone is at a different place and needs to be met in that place! After tutoring English online for the past 3 years nearly full-time and then teaching 5th grade in a brick-and-mortar school, I have the skills and experience needed to help your student meet their full potential.
A little bit about me! I'm a mom of 4 boys (ages 4, 12, 9, and 7). My house is crazy, but I love it! In my spare moments, I enjoy camping, hiking, and kayaking. I have been a writer and graphic designer since I was a little girl. As soon as I could write, I began creating all sorts of stories and poems. When we bought our first home computer (yes, I am that old), I quickly learned how to use programs like Microsoft Publisher and eventually the Adobe Design Suite and created my own newsletter as a kid. Writing and designing marketing material is in my blood! I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in English with a focus in Writing from Towson University in Baltimore, MD. I have completed numerous credits in Secondary Education and began a Master of Arts in Teaching degree as well. Life took me in a different direction for a few years and I worked at Johns Hopkins Medical System and University, providing marketing material for the programs. This led me to complete a Certificate in Graphic Design at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD. I began my own Graphic Design business, incorporating my gifts in graphic design as well as writing to create marketing material for my clients. After I began having children, I found myself becoming more involved in the education world. I homeschooled my son for one year and not long after I began as an online ESL teacher with VIPKID, earning my TESOL Certificate with this company. In terms of teaching experience, I have taught in both a traditional and nontraditional setting off and on throughout the past twenty years (currently I am a full-time fifth-grade teacher at a private school).
Students will find my tutoring/homework help sessions to be fun, interactive, and we will tackle any problems they are having at school and figure out how to move forward together!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time! Also, if there are any particular topics within my area of expertise that you would like for me to offer that I haven’t already, please let me know. I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon!
