In this interactive math class, students will practice different subtraction strategies for solving word problems. The strategy of focus in this class is separating (take away), with unknowns in each position. For example, 10-4=?, 12-?=6, and ?-5=4. The teacher will use a combination of slides and manipulatives to demonstrate each problem. This class will begin with single digit subtraction and increase to 2 digit subtraction without regrouping. Students should come with paper and pencil. The class will include the follwing: Mini lessons including slides and teacher demonstration Interactive problem solving as a group Guided practice Time for students to work independently Feedback Students should know basic subtraction facts.

Students will become more familiar with different the "separate" strategy with unknowns in all positions.
Students will build their confidence in knowing how to solve subtraction problems.
