In this highly individual tutoring program, students will be thoroughly engaged in the writing process while working hard to create a piece of interactive fiction that can be shared with their friends and family members. I will work closely with students to engage in their interests and develop a sense of ownership over their creative writing. 

Virtual meetings will include: 
- Book discussion and reading time 
- Individual mini-lessons on each part of the writing process 
- Exposure to great writers and their writing process via online videos and lessons 
- A review on grammar, basic parts of speech, and editing notation 
- Guidance through the class project  

The class breakdown:
 
Step One (Brainstorming): What is a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story? 
-Hellos
-Book chat and genre discussion: What are the different types of literary genres and what are their main plot descriptors?
-Introduction to "Choose Your Own Adventure" or Interactive Fiction
-Start "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Mini-Lesson: Break down the logic and flow of interactive fiction  
-Introduction to the project- we will be making our own interactive choose adventure story using the writing process as our backbone
-Mini-Lesson: Brainstorming: how can we keep track of our ideas? How do various award-winning writers keep track of all their ideas? 
Assignment: Where are we going in the past? Pick your settings and brainstorm and organize using one of the classroom techniques. 


Step Two (Brainstorming): Fleshing Out Our Setting 
-Hellos 
-Read "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Discussion on the previous assignment and setting choices 
-Mini-Lesson: Where can we do research? How should research be added to the notes? We will pretend to be an investigative journalist and find the basics outlines and rules for our world. 
Assignment: Together we will make a list of potential settings and where we could learn more about them. Start that research using one of our brainstorming organization techniques! 


Step Three (Brainstorming & Drafting): Creating The Setting 
-Hellos 
-Read "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Discussion on the previous assignment and we will start to place the settings into the flowchart
-Mini-Lesson: What is worldbuilding?
-Watch Neil Gaimen’s Worldbuilding Masterclass 
-What are the rules of your world? 
-What are these settings going to look like, sound like, feel like?
Assignment: Draw or design each one of the scenes. After the design is done, create “Setting Cards” and write down several adjectives that describe the room. 

Step Four (Brainstorming & Drafting): Character Development 
-Hellos 
-Read "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Discussion on previous assignments and talk about settings, reevaluating where they fall in the flowchart. Will we be changing anything? 
-Mini-Lesson: character development- who is our main character? Are we using ourselves or someone totally different?
-Choose and create characters through character development sheets 
-What does the character want that is going to propel them through the story? This is the beginning of our conflict that will drive the plot. 
Assignment: creating character sheets and basic parts of speech review sheet. 

Step Five (Drafting): Plotting Scenes 
-Hellos 
-Read "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Discussion on previous assignments and character sheets
-Mini-Lesson: what is an outline? How do we move from all this research into a draft? 
-Watch R.L. Stein’s “Getting From Idea to Outline”
-Start filling out the flowchart together adding setting and questions that move the character through the story. 
Assignment: Finish filling out the story's flow chart. 

Step Six (Drafting): Opening Scene Creation 
-Hellos 
-Read "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Discussion on previous assignments and flow chart
-Mini-Lesson: watching a PowerPoint interactive story in action.   
-Plot out the introduction together 
Assignment: finish the introductory passage 
Bonus: create cover art and send for the PowerPoint

Step Seven Drafting: The Drafting Process
-Hellos 
-Read "The Time Travel Journey" by Dan Jolley 
-Discussion on previous assignments and adding cover art to our own digital project
-Mini-Lesson: Application and the Man Vs. Wild Interactive story. We will break down the setting, characters, and plot of the show.
-Chapter outlines for the new scenes, start the writing in class together 
Assignment: finish drafting the scenes we started in class 
Bonus: art for our introduction to be added to the digital project  

Step Eight (Revision & Editing): Drafting and Revisions 
-Hellos 
-Continue "Man Vs. Wild" interactive story 
-Discussion on previous assignments and  place any created art into the project 
-Chapter draft outlines together
-Mini-Lesson: How do authors edit their work? 
     -Plot 
     -Characters 
     -Spelling and Grammar 
-Finish drafting together, any leftover work can be finished between classes 
Bonus assignment: digital art for each of the endings 

Step Nine (Editing): The Revision and Editing Process 
-Hellos 
-Continue "Man Vs. Wild" interactive story 
-Discussion on previous assignments and finishing up any drafting that needs to be done 
-Mini-Lesson: what is the difference between revision and editing? Why are we doing these steps together? 
-Revision and editing handout 
-Collecting all the work together and sending it in for edits 
-Assignment: go over edits and do as many corrections as you can at home. 

Step Ten (Final Drafting): Creating a Published Work
-Hellos 
- Continue "Man Vs. Wild" interactive story 
-Discussion on previous assignments and going through edits together.
-Mini-Lesson: starting our PowerPoint creation with active links 
Assignment: Polish final items of writing and continue creating art to go in the digital project

Hello! 
My name is Kathryn Rose and I am a museum educator and home educator located in Chicago, IL. I have spent thirteen years teaching at the Chicago Botanic Garden as both a resource teacher and a camp counselor. I am passionate about getting families outside and playing together. Prior to the garden, I taught middle school Social Studies at a private school in Chicago. I have my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from North Park University. 

I believe that learning should be fueled by joy and creativity. I find that students learn best when they are engaged in creative problem solving with a caregiver or teacher that they trust. My personal passions include geography, social studies, civics, outdoor exploration, and classic literature. I am always striving to find inventive ways to bring a "boring" subject matter back to life.
