Explore the Big HiSTORY of the Earth. The Story of the Earth will come alive in this through science, history, geology, art, and writing. Big HiSTORY of Earth brings our collective story alive. Explore the appearance of the earliest humans. Discover how they lived and survived. Watch as humans learned to live together in settlements and raise their own food. See the rise and fall of great civilizations around the world on every continent ending with the rise of the Roman Empire. We will explore concepts in science, history, geography, and art as we travel through the History of Earth. We will complete a class project during every session. This is part 2 of the Big HiSTORY of Earth. In part 1 we explore the birth of the Universe and of our Solar System and Earth, the rise of life on Earth, through the Dinosaurs and the Rise of Mammals. Every class will include an interactive exploration of the History of the Earth using short movies, diagrams, illustrations, and models. Our class schedule will be as follows: Week 1: Early Humans - From Nomads and Hunter-Gatherers to Agricultural Societies / We will make our own Cave Paintings Week 2: Pre-Historic Civilizations / Stone Circle Project - We will make Stonehenge Week 3: Ancient Mesopotamia / Decode Cuneiform Project - We will use printouts to learn to read and write in Cuneiform Week 4: Ancient Egypt / Pyramids - We will build our own paper pyramid Week 5: Ancient India / Clay Seals - We will create our own personal clay seal Week 6: Ancient China / Kites - We will make a decorative paper kite Week 7: Ancient Americas / Giant Head Sculpture - We will make a Giant Head Sculpture out of clay Week 8: Ancient Greece / Greek Building - We will build our own Greek-pillar building Week 9: Ancient Africa / Kush Jewelry - We will make a paper Kush necklace Week 10: Ancient Rome / Roman Mosaic - We will make our own paper Roman-style mosaic We will do a project every week at the END of CLASS. The Supplies for the Projects are: Week 1: Brown paper OR brown paper bags & brown OR black OR red paint & large paintbrushes & cup of water Week 2: Playdough* & plastic plate Week 3: Print Cuneiform Printouts from the Class Page & pencil Week 4: Clear tape & markers or crayons & safety scissors & Pyramid Template from Class Page Week 5: Oven dry clay or air dry clay Week 6: Paper OR Tissue Paper & straws & tape & string & Kite Printout from the Class Page Week 7: Play-dough or clay Week 8: 6-8 Empty Toilet Paper Tubes, cardboard, glue, Optional: white paint Week 9: 4 Popsicle Sticks or Disposable Plastic or Paper Straws, paper, glue, tape, safety scissors, decorating materials - paints, markers, crayons, pastels, etc., Osiris Printout from the Class Page Week 10: 1 piece large white paper, different colors of paper (at least five colors), glue, Optional: safety scissors This course is inspired by OER's Big History Project and World History Project. If your child has any special needs, please let me know via email prior to the start of the class.

Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a very long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.
Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Big History ..." classes where students learn about key times in history and complete hands-on projects. "Paint like ... Famous Artists" art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact Annette so she can work with you and your child.
Annette first became interested in ancient cultures in the 1970's when the "King Tut" craze swept the nation. She continued to study the ancient cultures of Persia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and others in college. Some years later, she taught herself to read Latin so she could read the works of Gaius Julius Caesar in their original form. She has taught ancient history as a part of her homeschool curriculum and developed the "Life in..." History series as a way of teaching her autistic daughter history.
Annette has completed Continuing Education Certification with OER's Big History and World History Projects and the NMNA's Foundation for Teaching and Learning about Native Americans. She completed her Best Start in Life: Early Childhood Development certificate. She is currently working on certifications for working with special needs children and her TEFL certification.
