This class is designed for the musician who has an interest in studying how music works. Using the musical elements of pitch and rhythm, we will explore how to create and vary their use in the world of Latin and Jazz. Learners will use a reflective journal to develop their unique answers to 2 essential questions: 1. How do musicians generate creative ideas? 2. How do musicians improve the quality of their creative work? To develop the answers to those questions, learners will work in an authentic environment, actively participating in discussions, cataloging their responses in the moment with words, and musical notation through the following topics: Lesson 1: Element of Music: Pitch, Scale Lesson 2: Element of Music: Rhythm Tree Lesson 3: Develop your voice: reflective practice, composition development, developing a playlist This class is designed to meet or exceed the following standards as written by the National Association for Music Education. Create MU:Cr1.1.E.5a Compose and improvise melodic and rhythmic ideas or motives that reflect characteristic(s) of music or text(s) studied in rehearsal. Create MU:Cr3.2.E.5a Share personally developed melodic and rhythmic ideas or motives – individually or as an ensemble – that demonstrate understanding of characteristics of music or texts studied in rehearsal. Perform MU:Pr5.3.E.5a Use self-reflection and peer feedback to refine individual and ensemble performances of a varied repertoire of music.

Elements of Music: Pitch, Scale
How do musicians generate creative ideas? Walk through the creative process and unpack how pitches are made and what instrumentation means. Then, let's create a new melody by organizing the pitches in a standard for called the scale. We will use major, minor, pentatonic, and modes. There is time for one or two updates and revisions to the in class composition to try new ideas or incorporate a suggestion. By the end of this session, the learner will have a new composition to add to their journal.

Elements of Music: Rhythm Tree
How do musicians generate creative ideas? Walk through the creative process and unpack how varying the length we hear a sound can make new combinations or rhythms. Add in the musical element of pitch and you have a world of possibilities. Test your melody by composing an original melody and add it to your journal.

2. have an understanding of reading the 5-lined staff (treble or bass) for their instrument

For over a decade, I have provided music instruction for PreK through high school across all types of instruments and ensembles. My students have gone on to successful careers with many of them performing in music. My skills of learning one instrument and being able to effectively transfer that understanding to many other instruments have served me well as a school music educator and earning a Master's of Music from the University of Tennessee for general, vocal, and instrumental education.
