Polymer Clay Sculpting of Astrological, Mythical Fantasy Dragons & Creatures

This is an On-going Class format. Students may attend any class(es) they wish.

In this class, we will work together to discuss and brainstorm ideas for our weekly Dragon/Creature build, based on the theme listed below. This is not a step-by-step class, as we are each creating our own work of art. Students may copy the sculpt as the teacher completes it, or work on their own design. First, we will discuss the Astrology, Zodiac or Horoscope of the week and how to use those characteristics in a Dragon or Creature. As a class, we will condition, cut, roll and form our pieces. Then we will assemble our body parts and get them prepared to be baked after class is over. The supplies are listed below and are necessary to complete the project. Students will personalize their dragons/creatures and showcase it to the class (if they wish to). Note that the teacher will be using Polymer Clay, but Students may use whichever sculpting medium they are comfortable with.

Note: Astrological/Zodiac/Animal signs will be explored from a cultural or historical perspective, not as fact. The approach is based on mainstream science, culture, or history, rather than promoting these topics as scientific truth or as part of a supernatural worldview.

Week of 2/6/22: We will discuss and create a Dragon or Creature based on Gemini
Week of 2/13/22: We will discuss and create a Dragon or Creature based on Leo
Week of 2/20/22: We will discuss and create a Dragon or Creature based on Capricorn
Week of 2/27/22: We will discuss and create a Dragon or Creature based on Pisces
....others to follow

**Polymer clay requires baking according to the package direction. (Generally ~275 °F, depending on your brand of clay). You will bake after class. Parental help is necessary.

Sculpting Medium (any brand/type you prefer. I like to use Sculpey Polymer Clay). *A little clay goes a LONG way in miniature sculpting!
Basic Sculpting tools, toothpick, smoothing tool, dotting tool
Some wooden toothpicks or metal wire (in case you need some structure)
A cutting tool (can be flat spatula, clay knife, anything that you are comfortable with using)
A non stick surface to work on (You can cover a piece of cardboard with parchment paper and tape it to the bottom…that works)
A small rolling pin or paintbrush handle or anything smooth to roll out small pieces of clay.
Variety of colors of clay (whatever colors you want for your sculptures)

OPTIONAL: If using baked clay:
Clear Water based gloss glaze for after baking (I use Sculpey Gloss Glaze). I will go over how to lacquer the clay after baking if the students want a professional, glossy finished look.
