We will explore (and review) what a plant needs to grow to start with and use that to help determine how the plant gets those things and what it does with them. Being October, we'll use a pumpkin plant to illustrate the various parts and their functions. All of this will come together in a drawing we will be doing during the presentation. We'll discover a bit about the pumpkin and it's relation to other members of the squash family. There will be plenty of opportunities for learners to ask...
Students will: - determine the needs of plants - discover the parts of the plants and how their function is connected to what it needs - gain an appreciation of the diversity within the squash family - create a drawing of a pumpkin plant that can be referred to after the presentation.
Please have a sheet of paper to draw on. You will also need a pencil, crayons, markers or coloured pencils. Please have a surface to draw on - a table, or a clipboard or a large book. This is optional, but if you'd like to have a small pumpkin with you during the presentation, that's just fine. We will not be carving or cutting up a pumpkin during the presentation though. I will have one already halved.
