このクラスで学べること

This will be an on-going Monday program that will highlight all of the fantastic things about picture books. They can be inspiring, mysterious, funny, thought-provoking, and sometimes just plain odd! You can attend a single session, or pencil this in as a Monday habit. No experience or supplies needed.

Each high-energy session will have the same series of events, with different books each time: introduction and welcome activity, classic picture book, action rhyme or movement game, contemporary picture book, wrap up activity. I'll also provide a recommended reading list that you can take to your own local library.

An example schedule might be:

July 8, Week 1: Theme - Animals
Blueberries for Sal (classic picture book), The Bear Ate Your Sandwich (contemporary)
Action rhymes/songs: Peanut Butter and Jelly, Going on a Bear Hunt

July 15, Week 2: Theme - Bedtime
Goodnight Moon (classic picture book), Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late (contemporary)
Action rhymes/songs: Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear and bedtime guessing game

July 22, Week 3: Theme - Food
Very Hungry Caterpillar (classic picture book), Muncha, Muncha, Muncha (contemporary)
Action rhymes/songs: What's missing food guessing game, I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas song

July 29, Week 4: Theme - Art
Harold and the Purple Crayon (classic picture book), The Lion and the Mouse (contemporary, wordless book with incredible art)
Action rhymes/songs: Magic pencil song, drawing activity
学習到達目標
Students will enjoy picture books and all of those early literacy skills that are embedded in sharing books: print awareness, letter knowledge, narrative skills, vocabulary, print motivation, and phonological awareness.

Parents will gain tips for reading to children, suggestions for additional books, and early literacy suggestions.

学習ニーズ
There are incredible, powerful picture books for everyone. I will specifically highlight a wide variety: wordless, topical (e.g. books about dyslexia), early readers, and plenty of books that encourage rereading and discussion at home.

I have an M.S. in Library and Information Science. I have been a youth services librarian for much of the past 23 years. When I wasn't an active librarian, I was teaching children's literature, young adult literature, and story telling to future librarians.

I have access to an incredible collection of picture books, many of which I've selected and purchased from my book budget, at my library. I lead three weekly story times, although this will have a slightly different focus as it is a celebration of the book, whereas my typical story time is a celebration of community, the library, and whatever theme I've chosen for the week.

I review 12 books a month for a professional library journal, I present at conferences, and I offer parenting workshops at my library on reading with their children. I miss teaching a great deal, and I know this will help fill that gap and also let me do what I love most: sharing the wonder and power of books.
