In this fun camp, we will investigate mechanics, the branch of physics concerned with the motion of objects and the forces acting on these objects. We will discuss how and why things move the way they do through hands-on exploration. We will learn how engineers use physics concepts through the engineering process to create and innovate. The 4-day schedule: Day 1: Catapults Materials Catapult - 9-11 craft sticks, 4-8 rubber bands, and a spoon. Launching Material - marshmallows, pompoms, or something similar. Day 2: Balloon Rockets and Air-Powered Toy Cars Materials Balloon Rockets - balloon, string (long to attach over a distance), straw, and tape. Air-Powered Toy Cars - toy car (the one you have or made), balloon, straw, a rubber band, and tape. Day 3: Parachutes Materials Parachutes - toy figures, tissue paper or coffee filters, string, and tape. Day 4: Inertia Trick Challenge Materials Level 1 - cup, 3x5 card, and coin. Level 2 - tablecloth or placemat and bowl. Level 3 - glass, 3x5 card, paper roll (paper towel or toilet paper), and a plastic egg.
