In this ongoing class students will learn to read and write CVC and CCVC short vowel word families. We will begin by practicing the sounds in the words and blending the phonemes without a visual prompt(Phoneme Blending). We will then move on to practice building the words with magnetic white boards and magnetic letters, white boards and markers, or pencil and paper. We will read a combination of stories from Reading A_Z (with permission), and silly stories I have written for each word family we cover. We practice reading them at the end of each class. We read the stories together and then take turns reading them individually if students feel comfortable reading aloud. Additionally, we will cover sight word (high frequency words) each week. I pace the class to meet the needs of the group. If students need more practice on a particular word family or sight word, we will covered it again the next week. Additionally, certain sight words will also be covered. These will be practiced in the CVC stories and in stories from Reading A- Z stories (read with permission from Reading A-Z). Students can join the class at any point. A new word family and sight word will be taught in each week. The following is an example of some of the CVC word families to be covered each month. Additionally, consonant blends will be introduced in some of the word families. Hi my name is Michele Pallas. I am a retired teacher from California who loves to teach reading and believes every child can be a successful reader. I don't give up. I have taught grades K through 6th grade special education for more than 30 years. Additionally, I ran a learning center for general education students and special education students, and team taught with general ed teacher in their classrooms.
I believe every child has their own learning style. This may be auditory, visual, kinesthetic or a combination. I use a multisensory approach to all my teaching. We talk, write, move and listen through out the lessons. I believe in the I do it, we do it and you do it method of teaching. Every child has an opportunity to share. Classes will be fast paced. Each session will be divided into 5-10 minute sections. Each will focus on a different skill.
I hold a general education credential, a mild to moderate special education and moderate to severe special education credential, and a resource specialist certificate. I have taught reading, mathematics, and written language at the elementary level. I have a Masters in Education. My true passion is teaching beginning reading. My second passion is teaching the thinking or metacognitive reading comprehension skills needed to be a successful reader. I love to help students become life long readers, even the reluctant ones.
So in closing I would like to share a fun fact about myself. I have two goat friends that I visit on my daily walks. Their names are Jellybean and Lollypop. Have a great day. Hope to see you in my classes.
