In this one time class, your child will do a variety of engaging activities that develop their phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phonemes. Having strong phonemic awareness is one of the best early predictors for reading success. This class is great for learners who are in preschool, pre-kindergarten or Kindergarten. Sample Class Activities: We will do activities to build phonemic awareness such as identifying rhyming words, identifying syllables, isolating sounds, blending and segmenting sounds, adding sounds, deleting sounds, and manipulating sounds in words. All these activities are done orally by listening and manipulating the sounds. Example: "Say up. What is the 1st sound in up? --> /u/

Hi, my name is Jessica Higgins and I have been teaching for 19 years. I have experience both as an elementary school classroom teacher and reading specialist. I have spent the last 12 years as a reading specialist and work with students that need extra support in reading/writing and students who have learning disabilities including dyslexia. I teach classes that help students review phonics skills that correspond to their grade level or their needs. I believe teaching should be engaging and fun. In my literacy classes, students will have ample opportunity to practice literacy skills through books and games! I love to travel and to explore trying new foods. In my free time, I also like to do arts and crafts and baking!
