FULL COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will study chemistry within a Harry Potter Potions class! In class one we will travel to Diagon Alley to learn about Potions/lab equipment, and experiment with invisible ink from Weasley's. In class two we will learn about matter by classifying ingredients like dragon's breath, bat wings, and unicorn tears, we also make a edible Liquid Luck potion. In class three we will learn changes of state by making a bubbling brew. In class four we take a field trip to Madam Puttifoots' Tea shop to test the PH levels of her teas. We will create a magnetic Slughorn slime, and a disintegrating draught in classes five and six, as we study the periodic table. We will study osmosis in class seven by making a swelling potion and its antidote. We will conclude the class series by making Dragon toothpaste and experimenting with Dementors' breath as we study chemical reactions! 1) Lab equipment. Shopping for supplies in Diagon Alley. Invisible Ink. 2) Matter. Felix Felices/ Liquid Luck 3) Changes of state. Bubbling Brew. 4) PH scale. Testing with Madam Puddifoot’s Tea. 5) Types of Elements. Slughorn’s Slime. 6) Periodic table. Disintegrating Draught. 7) Osmosis. Swelling potion & antidote. 8) Chemical Reactions. Dragon Toothpaste. 9) Sublimation. Dementors Breath. 10) Presentations & Experiments Lessons 1-9 each consist of a class discussion, video lecture, and experiment. Students are encouraged to share with the class by posting any combination of comments, videos, and pictures. In lesson 10 students will share their class projects. I hope to see you at Hogwarts!

Experiments are demonstrated in class. If you would like to follow along you will need. -Class One candle, cotton swab, lemon juice, paper, pen/pencil -Class Two any flavor ice cream, any flavor carbonated beverage, spoon, bowl -Class Three baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, bowl -Class Four Vinegar Water Baking soda Black tea - Class Five School glue Iron oxide Liquid starch Neodymium Magnet (Buying pre-made magnetic slime or slime kit is an option as well) -Class 6 Vinegar 2 eggs -Class 7 Distilled water Corn syrup -Class 8 1-liter plastic soda bottle Hydrogen peroxide (12%) (This is found at a store that sells hair care products. Ask for hydrogen peroxide that is labeled 40-volume. This is the same as a 12% solution. Cream or regular) Liquid dish soap Food coloring Package of dry yeast (found at the grocery store) Measuring spoons (helpful not required) Funnel (helpful not required) This will get messy! Safety glasses, gloves, a tablecloth/protective tray, and adult supervision are recommended.

Welcome!
My name is Courtney! I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Science Education from Kent State University. I am also TESOL certified. I have been teaching since 2008. I started teaching exclusively online in the Fall of 2016. I teach science, ESL, Health, and math classes. Many of my classes have a fun theme! I believe students should be comfortable, engaged, and interested while learning.
In my free time, I like to learn, create, and enjoy nature. Some of my hobbies include Oculus Quest, hiking, kayaking, dancing, camping, painting, calligraphy, and music.
I enjoyed reading the Harry Potter and Warriors series and have created classes with similar themes. I am always open to creating new classes with themes that will interest my students!
