Syllabus: People and Places in the Community (Part 1 of 2 Semesters)
Course Overview: This 13-week course introduces Kindergarten to Second Grade students to the people and roles that make up a community while teaching them the basics of writing with Structure and Style. Using the required textbook, students will learn about various community workers, practice writing techniques, and enjoy fun activities and games.

Required Materials:
•	People and Places in Our Community Student Book: Link to book
•	3-ring binder
•	File folders
•	Envelopes or ziplock bags
•	Craft supplies (crayons, markers, scissors, glue, etc.)

Weekly Structure:
•	Story Time: Read a storybook related to the week's theme.
•	Vocabulary: Learn and review new vocabulary words.
•	Writing Techniques: Introduce and practice IEW techniques (Note Making, Outlining, Writing from Notes, Retelling Narrative Stories).
•	Activities and Games: Engage in fun activities and games related to the theme.
•	Assignments: Complete writing assignments using the learned techniques.

Week 1:
•	Theme: Construction, Big Machines
•	IEW Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines
•	Activity: Using craft supplies complete the My toolbox exercise 
Week 2:
•	Theme: Roads, Building Roads, Snowplows
•	IEW Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines
•	Activity: Create a road map and decorate it with markers.
Week 3:
•	Theme: Information, The Library and Librarians
•	IEW Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines
•	Activity: Make a book and discuss favorite books.
Week 4:
•	Theme: Airports, Pilots
•	IEW Unit 2: Writing from Notes
•	Activity: Create paper airplanes and have a flying contest.
Week 5:
•	Theme: Trains
•	IEW Unit 2: Writing from Notes, ly adverb
•	Activity: Build a train using Appendix II.
Week 6:
•	Theme: Mail Carriers
•	IEW Unit 2: Writing from Notes
•	Activity: Create and "mail" letters to classmates.
Week 7:
•	Theme: Recycling
•	IEW Unit 2: Writing from Notes
•	Activity: Make a recycled item with craft supplies and recyclable materials.
Week 8:
•	Theme: Banks
•	IEW Unit 2: Writing from Notes, who-which clause
•	Activity: Play a "bank" game using play money.
Week 9:
•	Theme: Buses
•	IEW Unit 2: Writing from Notes
•	Activity: Design a bus route map and decorate a bus.
Week 10:
•	Theme: Emergency Room
•	IEW Unit 3: Retelling Narrative Stories
•	Activity: Role-play an emergency room scenario.
Week 11:
•	Theme: Emergency Room (continued)
•	IEW Unit 3: Retelling Narrative Stories
•	Activity: Create a first-aid kit with craft supplies.
Week 12:
•	Theme: The Rescue Squad
•	IEW Unit 3: Retelling Narrative Stories, strong verb 
•	Activity: Draw and color a rescue squad vehicle.
Week 13:
•	Theme: The Rescue Squad (continued)
•	IEW Unit 3: Retelling Narrative Stories
•	Activity: Write and illustrate a rescue mission story.

Homework:
•	Complete weekly writing assignments using the learned techniques.

•	Participation in discussions, activities, and games is necessary for success.

Additional Resources:
•	Fun videos and songs to reinforce grammar concepts.
•	Source texts, note posters, and other items to help remember concepts will be provided.

This course will help students develop a love for writing while learning about the important roles people play in their community.
