Let's make maps! Each day during this multi-day camp, learners will receive a PDF printable of one or two continents. We will work together as a group to identify the continents. Then, once we know what area of the world we are looking at, we will talk about the different ecosystem of that area and learn which parrots thrive in that ecosystem. Later, I will introduce everyone to a live version of one of those parrot types. We will talk about where on the continent the parrots live, what they eat, how they nest, and how their ecosystem is changing. We will also portion out the areas of the continents the parrots call home, and color them in using the color of our choice. Once the continents are divided and marked, your learner will cut them out and paste the onto a piece of poster board. Then they will create a color key on one corner of their poster board and label the colors they chose with the appropriate parrot. There are four main areas of the world where parrots thrive. Each day, we will focus on one of these areas until we have visited every part of the world. There are over 350 different types of parrots in the world. In this class we will learn about 16 of them. Learners will choose three parrots from every region and also learn about the live parrot of the region. Your learner will end this camp with a colorful map of their own making. While I don't intend for this to be a lecture as much as a time where I can share some information and allow the learners' curiosity to guide us through the rest of the information, we will need to pass certain checkpoints during the hour, therefore learners can expect something like this: Day 1: Class will start with me verifying that everyone has their PDF of area one printed. We will then identify the area of the world using a wold map template that I will provide. I will then use slideshows, full color books, and a live parrot to give your learner information about this area of the word. They will use color to mark certain aspects of the area--mountain ranges, parrot habitats and migration zones, and any other aspect of the area the learners want to identify. Once we have finished marking area one, We will add it to our poster board and begin our map. Day 2: we will repeat the steps of the previous day, but this time we will work with area two. We will also spend some time measuring our map to make sure we are glueing the second area down in the correct location. Day 3: we will repeat the above steps with area three. Day 4: we will repeat the steps above with area four and share our finished maps.

As always, when talking about animals and environment, there is a possibility that we will run across a parrot who has gone extinct due to human behavior. I will not dwell on it, but I will answer any questions learners have with gentleness and respect.

教師の専門知識と資格
Hello, Outschool families. I'm Miss Robin, The Bird Lady. All of my classes, for ages 3 through 12, focus on promoting literacy, creativity, and social skills. As an an avid reader, I'm passionate about instilling a lifelong love of reading. As a children's book writer, I love exploring stories and creating with kids.
I believe that learning is driven by curiosity and wonder. As a teacher, I take a wholistic approach, using the materials present to introduce and reinforce literacy, science, mathematics and social science. My classes are set up to encourage participation through listening and sharing. And, of course, they all include something birdy-ful.
I have a B.A. in English and Sociology, with an emphasis on early childhood development, from St. Olaf College. Over the years, I've written five middle-grade novels while also working as a nanny, a pre-school teacher, an after-school daycare provider, or an elementary school reading tutor. I am currently the nursery coordinator for a local non-profit, an Outschool mom of four, and a bird caretaker. My house holds a pandemonium of parrots. My backyard is home to a flock of chickens. I also spend time at a local parrot sanctuary, and bird-sit for neighbors and friends.
When I'm not spending time with a good book, I'm enjoying a board game with friends, whistling along with birds, making a mess in my kitchen, coaxing new growth in my garden plots, singing loudly in my shower, or catching up on the latest Disney/Pixar/Marvel stories with my kids.
Thank you for spending some time with me today. I look forward to meeting your wonder-filled learners!
