UPDATE: Because I am going back to classroom teaching in the fall, I am no longer able to open new sections of this class. However, I have created a FLEX version of this class where we will cover the same material, and I will be available to give thorough feedback on the paragraphs submitted to me. Enroll in the FLEX class here: https://outschool.com/classes/paragraph-writing-practice-writing-a-new-paragraph-each-week-Ix29mXd1?usid=TTO3nIBx&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link In this ongoing class (6-week cycle), we will work on creating detailed, cohesive paragraphs every week. I will give the students a new writing prompt each week and explain how to write the different types of paragraphs based on our topic for the week. We will work together to come up with strong topic sentences and relevant details for the topic. I will model organized writing by giving the students examples of my own paragraphs. Then, students will have some time to put their sentences together to create a cohesive paragraph. At the end of class, students can share their paragraphs with the rest of the class. If they do not feel comfortable sharing aloud, they can send their work to me or post it in the classroom, and I will provide feedback. If there's time at the end of each class, we'll also do a quick review of the parts-of-speech by completing a Mad Lib together. After each class, I will post a scrambled paragraph in the classroom. Students will be asked to organize the sentences in order to form a good, complete paragraph. I will also post the answer sheet so students can check their work. This activity will be completely optional, but will help students practice paragraph organization. Week One- Descriptive Paragraph: Describe your favorite food. *Focus on topic sentences Week Two- Opinion Paragraph: Pick a side. *Focus on supporting details Week Three- Expository Paragraph: Look what I can do! *Focus on unnecessary details Week Four- Narrative Paragraph: What a great day! *Focus on transitional words Week Five- Descriptive Paragraph: Use your five senses. *Focus on conclusion sentences Week Six- Narrative Paragraph: Start your story. *Focus on sentence length (This last week their writing will not need to be structured in like a typical paragraph. The writing can be more creative) **Class time may very by a few minutes based on the time it takes for learners to write their paragraphs. Current Sections: Tuesday 4:00pm EST section: June 21, June 28, July 5, July 12, July 19, July 26

Hi! I teach a variety of English classes for elementary school through high school. I like to use multiple teaching strategies that appeal to all different learning styles in order to make learning fun and interesting. I like to laugh and have fun in class, but I also strive to inspire my students to think critically and write well. I love to talk, but I don't like to lecture. I want to hear from the learners! My classes are interactive and full of opportunities for learners to share their thoughts and ideas.
I am a certified English teacher with thirteen years of experience teaching secondary English. I graduated with honors from Lander University with a degree in English, and then I received my teaching degree from Coastal Carolina University three years later. My first job was at a public school in South Carolina, where I taught for seven years. During my time there, I received the Golden Apple Award from a local tv station after being nominated by one of my students.
Then, in 2012 my family and I moved to the Middle East where I taught high school English and fifth grade English at a private school in Kuwait. After 6 years in the Middle East, we moved to Taiwan, and I worked online with ESL students in order to help them improve their English grammar and writing skills. I have really enjoyed working with so many wonderful students from all over the world! While overseas, I continued my college courses in order to keep my teaching certificate updated and to explore new teaching ideas and strategies that I can apply to my current lessons.
We moved back to the US in 2020, and I went back to classroom teaching in 2022. I currently teach 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English classes at a local high school. However, I still enjoy teaching my Outschool classes, and I make sure to make time for my online students also. When I’m not teaching in some capacity or spending time with my family, I like trying new recipes, reading, and hiking. Fun fact about me: I LOVE to travel and experience different cultures. I have visited 17 countries so far and would love to add more to that list one day.
