週1時間. Homework is divided into two distinct parts: researching and revising. As this is a two-week course, the conclusion of the first session ("Formulate your Opinion") will give students plenty of writing to revise and perfect. In addition, if they would like to work on their final draft for the second session ("Present your Op-ed"), they may do so. However, note that some time will be allotted in the second session for peer reviews and final revisions. Homework is optional at the conclusion of the first class and I leave it to the discretion of the learner's parent(s) whether or not they will submit. However, if it is completed, it will be checked and revised for the benefit of the student before the second class!

In high school, “Creative Writing” was my favorite class, and it still is! Now, as a certified teacher, I provide this advanced class for elementary-level students to find the joy in expressing themselves. As a sort of prelude to my “Debate” class, students will be able to logically and coherently express their arguments, ideas, and most importantly, their opinions.

Here is an exhaustive list of topics and themes that will be covered:

• What is the best (topic; i.e. pet, sport, subject, etc.)?
• Option A vs. Option B
• Hot issues and trends
• Thought-provoking cartoons

Utilizing these topics and themes, students can persuade others of their opinions and ideas. In reference to the syllabus, this two week class will incorporate the following lessons:

1.) Week of June 8th, 2024: Formulate your Opinion
2.) Week of June 15th, 2024: Present your Op-ed

Some fun incentives for students to work hard include a survey at the end of two weeks where we will vote which opinion piece was the most persuasive. There will be other elements in this survey as well such as “Teacher’s Choice (honorable mention)” award, selecting which op-ed were persuasive, etc.
学習到達目標
The learning objectives for students include the following six criteria: author’s purpose, voice, register, organization, sentence fluency, and argument.

レッスン 1:
Formulate your Opinion
In the first week, students will be presented with a tantalizing topic. There are many examples of themes, including but not limited to “the best school lunch menu”, “tennis is better than volleyball”, “AI is beneficial for the classroom”, and more. Students will be encouraged to take their own notes on the discussions we have, but are not required to do so because we will have a working, collaborative document. At the end of this lesson, students will be equipped to write their opinion piece.

レッスン 2:
Present your Op-ed
In the second week, we will reconvene and engage in higher order thinking skills through the use of thought-provoking discussion questions and follow-ups. Essentially, students will be allotted additional class time to share, peer review, and finally present their opinion pieces to the rest of the class. Afterwards, we will give and receive feedback. There will be a designated time for compliments and encouragement (which can be conducted anonymously through surveys).

Hello, I'm Hyung-Gwan from both the United States of America and South Korea! I am an American citizen but I am also very much in touch with my Korean roots. I initially started off as a consultant after completing my Master's program at Carnegie Mellon University (Heinz College). However, after a few years working in the industry, I discovered a passion for teaching that was unparalleled. Much like both of my parents who are veteran educators, I realized my calling and passion for education. A little more about me than just my career: I enjoy watching films, being active outdoors, and trying new hobbies. I look forward to working with you (let's study hard)! ^^
