What is a fractured fairytale, you ask? A fractured fairy tale is a modernized or rewritten version of the original. Ever thought what would have happened if Jack never traded his money for the beans? What if all the king's men could put Humpty Dumpty together again? I bet he wouldn't sit on any more walls. If you love fairy tales, this class is for you! In this writing club, we will discuss fractured fairy tales, play fairytale and writing games, and write our own fractured fairytales. Discussions will be student-led and will included strengths and weaknesses of the original stories, how they fit in modern times, and how they made us feel. There will be a different literary focus each week such as character development, plot development, setting, and perspective. Focusing on a single literary element will help learners see just how impactful that element can be and will refine skills used in writing and reading comprehension. In addition to the peer feedback, learners will submit their stories and individual feedback will be provided in a private message. If writers do not complete their story during class, they will have the option to finish it and submit it at a later time. Week of June 9: Snow White- focus on perspective Week of June 16: Beauty and The Beast- focus on perspective Week of June 23: Writer's Choice Gender Swap! We will switch genders for the fairytale of the writer's choosing. (For example, the prince in Sleeping Beauty pricks his finger and Princess Aurora has to save him). Week of June 30- The Little Mermaid- focus on setting Week of July 7- Writer's choice Week of July 14- The Three Little Pigs- focus on character traits Week of July 21- Give any character magical powers- or take them away Week of July 28- Cinderella Week of August 4- Encanto Week of August 11- No class Week of August 18- Learner's choice Week of August 25- Little Red Riding Hood in the present day Week of September 1- Peter Pan Week of September 8- Encanto Week of September 15- Rumpelstiltskin Week of September 22- Lilo & Stitch Week of September 29- Writer's choice Week of October 6- Frozen 1 and/or Frozen 2 Week of October 13- Harry Potter Week of October 20- Coco Week of October 27- Up Week of November 3- Writer's Choice Week of November 10- Star Wars Week of November 17- Aladdin Week of November 24- Tangled/Rapunzel TBD: How to Train Your Dragon Raya and the Last Dragon The Good Dinosaur Luca Turning Red Students will have the opportunity to write about anything fitting in the guidelines. A more specific prompt will be provided for those that need it.
