Reading Newbery Award books exposes readers to high-quality literature that stimulates imagination, cultivates critical thinking, and fosters empathy through diverse narratives and compelling storytelling. In this class each week, students will read about half of one Newbery Award book before class and then come to class ready to discuss. Parents/students will need to obtain a copy of the book before class. You can visit your local library and online lending sites, or purchase a book wherever you shop.
Some of the Newbery Award books have themes of death and other difficult topics such as divorce and bullying. As with all my book clubs, death and difficult topics aren't the focus of the class but rather studying to see how characters choose to deal with these difficult times.
