Activities 1. Introduction: Students will introduce themselves and share their responses to the following prompts on activities for 2022: a. How old did you turn in 2022? b. What grade were you in at the beginning of 2022? c. Describe one fun thing you did in 2022. d. Who are some of the people you met in 2022? e. Think of all of the places you visited in 2022. Which place was the furthest from your home? f. Describe something you learned how to do in 2022. 2. KWHL – (K) What do you know about New Year’s celebrations? (W) What you will learn? (H) How we will learn? 3. Read/discuss The History of New Year's Eve by History.com to answer the following questions. a. How did ancient people organize their calendars? b. How did Julius Caesar affect modern New Year’s celebrations? c. What are some of the food traditions found in New Year’s celebrations? 4. Next, students share New Year’s traditions from their personal celebrations. 5. After sharing personal traditional celebrations, students will read and discuss the article, How to set and keep your goals for the new year, by Wiki How news editor, adapted by Newsela staff, 01/03/2019. As the students read the article, they will write a new years goal and an action plan for keeping their goal. To help select a goal, the students will brainstorm ideas related to a place they would like to visit, a skill they want to learn, a topic they would like to study, a hobby they would like to start, a savings goal, or an organization they would like to serve. 7. After identifying a goal, the students will divide the goal into small implementation steps, create an action plan, identify any materials or support needed to successfully work on their goal, and identify activities that will help them stay motivated in achieving their goals. Also, students will explain why they chose their goal and how it will help them or other people. 8. Conclusion/evaluation: What new things did you learn about New Year’s Day or setting goals did you that you learn from this study?
