I'm excited to offer this flex version of the popular "My Mind on My Money: A Teen's Guide to Financial Independence" class series! This flex course features all of the content found in the following one-time classes:

My Mind on My Money: A Teen Guide to Financial Independence
My Mind on My Money: A Teen Guide to Investing
My Mind on My Money: A Teen Guide to Earning Income
My Mind on My Money: A Teen Guide to Paying for College

The FI movement is growing as more people realize the importance of financial independence. Some people are saving enough money to retire at 35 or 40 years old! How is this possible? Join us as we explore the basics of personal finance from an FI perspective. We will investigate the strategies you can use to successfully make money work for you so that you don't have to keep working for money! Philosophically, we will discuss using money as a tool to shape the life you want. We will also examine the growing FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early) and talk about what it means to retire and action steps you can take now to help you get there. Is it crazy to think about retirement before you start working full time? No way!

We will move beyond the basics of spending and saving and discuss how to mindfully reduce spending, increase income (even at a young age!) and invest your money wisely. We will specifically discuss how to develop clear, targeted savings goals, how to create new streams of income and low-cost investment strategies. We will also explore different types of savings and investment vehicles such as savings accounts, money market accounts, CDs, stocks, index funds, cryptocurrency and investment properties.

Each week learners will receive a new interactive lesson and a digital copy of the class notes. Instead of "homework," learners will complete steps to improve their financial lives such as setting up a spending and saving tracker, reflecting on their habits with money, brainstorming income ideas, etc. Instructions and guidance will be provided in each week's lesson. Learners will have the opportunity to interact with each other to share ideas and get feedback. They can also reach out to me anytime! I'll be in contact throughout the class to check in, answer questions and help each learner make an individualized plan for their finances.

Our class will take place over four weeks with the following schedule:

Week One: Bringing Mindfulness to Our Spending
Week Two: How and Where to Save
Week Three: How Can I Earn Money as a Teen?
Week Four: How to Plan for Major Expenses (Focusing on saving for college, a car, etc.) and FI Success Stories

This is a flex class which means learners can access the content anytime throughout the week. If you are interested in taking this course as a live class, please let me know.

As with any financial topics, I remind learners that they should gather information about investing from a variety of sources. Caregivers, friends, books, financial advisors, etc. I do not give specific financial advice to students in class, although I do share a variety of investing ideas and resources for further consideration. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to chat with caregivers about what they have learned and share and discuss their ideas for saving and budgeting. To aid caregivers with this conversation, all of our notes and resources from the class will be posted in the classroom so that you can check them out with your learner.

I am a social studies educator with a passion for personal finance. I am certified to teach economics, and have a strong knowledge in debt reduction strategies, budgeting and saving. Over the past few years I have educated myself on the principles of Financial Independence and our family is now debt free! I wish someone had shared more financial tips with me when I was younger and I am excited about sharing what I have learned with you!

I have taught a variety of social studies courses in both the traditional classroom and online environment for over 13 years. I love making history come to life through first hand accounts, images and stories. While my background is in middle and high school education, I have worked with younger (and older) learners as well. As a homeschooling mom of two (ages 5 and 8) I love the Outschool concept and how it enables teachers to personalize learning for all!

Having fun while we learn is so important! I focus on keeping the classroom environment accepting of all students while delving into these important topics.
