What will be taught? What topics will we cover? Each week, we will talk about a musical. We will discuss what we know about the musical, songs, and staging. We'll discuss any relevant history behind the show. We will use Nearpod to look at slides, poll learners for their opinions, and spark discussion. The first four shows we will discuss are listed below in the weekly breakdown. Following that, we will include other shows in which students have expressed an interest. Week of January 14: This week's musical is "Hadestown". We will discuss the mythology behind the show and how the music is used to tell the story. Week of January 21: This week's musical is "Les Miserables". We will discuss the plot and the French history behind it. Learners will discuss why this continues to be a popular show with productions continuing worldwide. Week of January 28: This week's musical is "Wicked". We'll discuss this new take on a classic story. Week of February 4: This week's musical is "School of Rock". Which characters do learners most relate to? How does the music contribute to the way we feel about the characters? The following weeks will be based on learner interest, and we will discuss musicals that the students express an interest in. The musical to be discussed will be listed a week in advance. How will the class be structured? The class will be structured with lots of discussion and activities (Kahoot! games, and polls) to facilitate learner interaction. Learners will also be encouraged to leave any additional ideas and thoughts they have as classroom comments to be addressed in the next class. I lead the class with open-ended questions and encourage the sharing of ideas. There is no prior experience or knowledge required, but it is helpful if learners have listened to the music from the show being discussed before class. As a note, I am happy to teach to single learners and I do not cancel due to low enrollment.
学習到達目標
Students will learn about and exchange ideas as they discuss their impressions of various Broadway shows. They will start to think critically about what it is that makes a particular show "good". They will also begin to explore aesthetics by discussing why they prefer a certain show over another.
その他の情報
保護者へのお知らせ
Parents should be aware of potential language and mature themes in some of the shows we will discuss. We may use Kahoot! for games, depending on learner interest.
受講に必要なもの
Learners will need access to the cast recordings of the shows we will discuss. These can be obtained through iTunes or Amazon if you don't already have them. Learners may also want to have a second device available (like a phone) in order to more easily participate in Nearpod activities.

I am a certified K-12 art teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience both in and out of the classroom and learners of all ages. I have taught art criticism at a variety of grade levels. Musical theater has been a passion of mine since I was very young and I enjoy digging into a show to really explore it. I've incorporated my love of theater into my studies and it is a huge part of how and why I love teaching!
