My class is based on Music Learning Theory (MLT), which explains that we learn music the same way we learn our mother tongue. This is a process in which children are first exposed to a wide variety of songs and chants, with and without lyrics, because what we want to emphasize is the music. Then, they begin to imitate certain musical patterns, which are like words in the language, and finally to improvise their own patterns, such as their first phrases in the speaking language. The goal of this MLT-based class is to establish an environment to develop children's "Audiation", that is, children are able to hear and think music with understanding. They will acquire musical skills in the same way they are absorbing and learning their native language. Children will have a playful experience with music through their body that will prepare them for any formal education. Their motor skills, attention, memory, lateral dominance, coordination, language, spatial sense, balance, integration of both brain hemispheres, are some of the milestones that will benefit from this music and movement class.
Music has been part of my whole life. At the age of 7 I began my formal education playing the violin. I have been teaching music from infants and preschool to adults before I finished my violin degree. I have received international training in music education in different pedagogies such as Dalcroze, Kodaly, Suzuki and hold a certification on Early Childhood Music based on Music Learning Theory (MLT).
Scarves in different colors if possible 6 Eva foam or felt material circles in different colors (15 to 20 cm diameter) Hula hoop Tambourine Claves or 2 rhythmic sticks, or 2 drumsticks, or 2 medium wooden spoons A pair of maracas (could be homemade) 1 Jump rope Puppet(s) (could be DIY) Stuffed animals The small percussion instruments your child already has might work 1 glockenspiel, 8 notes minimum (please avoid the toy version. These are usually not in tune) Not all materials are needed at each session. A list will be sent in advance
Comfortable clothing and enough space to move our body safely is required. If possible, children must wear non-slip socks to avoid any falls. Movement activities may involve jumping, hopping, moving like an animal in 4 legs, swaying from side to side, spin around, stand on one leg, walk following different shapes on the floor. Parental supervision is recommended. Please, enable original sound from Zoom when connecting in order to listen clearly to your child's musical responses when they are encouraged to do it. Here the link if you need some help: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/115003279466-Enabling-option-to-preserve-original-sound If there are many sounds interfering in the background during the session, I will need to mute your child's microphone for a better class experience.
