In our Grade 4 English Language and Writing class, we will build a strong English grammar, punctuation, sentence construction, and language mechanics foundation. Master grammar rules, punctuation and sentence construction in Outschool's accredited Montessori Online School.

Our structured lessons feature interactive learning experiences and personalized support. Students master essential skills that are crucial for effective communication.
Topics covered include:

Sentences, Fragments, and Run-ons:
Students will learn to distinguish between complete sentences, fragments, and run-on sentences. They will practice identifying and correcting fragments (incomplete thoughts) and run-ons (two or more independent clauses improperly joined), ensuring clarity and coherence in their writing.

Order the Words to Create a Sentence:
The focus will be on understanding sentence structure—subject, verb, and object—and the correct arrangement of words to form meaningful sentences. Students will engage in activities where they rearrange jumbled words to create clear and grammatically correct sentences, strengthening their sentence construction skills.

Parts of Speech including Verb Type/ Tense and Relative Pronouns:
Students will delve into different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions) and their roles in sentences. They will explore verb types (action, linking, helping), verb tenses (present, past, future), and relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that) to understand how these elements contribute to sentence structure and meaning.

Use the Correct Subject or Verb - with Compound Subjects:
Grade 4 students will practice ensuring subject-verb agreement in sentences with compound subjects (subjects connected by 'and' or 'or'). They will learn to match singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs, honing their ability to write grammatically accurate sentences.

Contractions:
Students will be introduced to contractions—shortened forms of words created by omitting one or more letters and replacing them with an apostrophe (e.g., can't for cannot). They will learn the rules for using contractions appropriately in informal writing and speech, reinforcing their understanding through practical exercises.

Commas with Direct Addresses and After Introductory Words:
The class will cover the rules for using commas in sentences with direct addresses (when directly addressing someone or something) and after introductory words or phrases (e.g., However, we decided to go). Students will practice applying these rules to enhance clarity and structure in their writing.

Capitalization:
Grade 4 students will learn and apply capitalization rules, including capitalizing the first word in a sentence, proper nouns (names of specific people, places, and things), and titles of books, movies, and songs. They will practice using capital letters consistently and appropriately to improve the readability and correctness of their writing.

Formatting and Formatting Titles:
Students will understand the conventions of formatting, such as using italics or quotation marks for titles of books, movies, poems, and other works. They will learn when and how to apply these formatting techniques correctly in their writing, ensuring accurate punctuation and identification of titles.

Class Structure

My class will be structured around a blend of direct instruction, interactive activities, and collaborative learning experiences. Lessons will begin with clear explanations of grammar concepts, followed by guided practice and application exercises. Students will participate in group discussions, peer reviews, and individual assignments to reinforce their learning.

My teaching style emphasizes active engagement and critical thinking learning. I encourage students to ask questions, explore concepts through hands-on activities, and apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts. Visual aids, examples, and real-world applications will be used to make abstract concepts tangible and relatable.

Students will have numerous opportunities to interact with me and their peers through class discussions, small group activities, and individual conversations during the work cycle. I will create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, seeking clarification, and sharing their ideas, fostering a collaborative approach to learning grammar and mechanics.
