12 lessons//12 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Understanding the Author's Point of View and the Themes of the Book
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Australia
How does being an island that is also a continent, with habitable space only on the perimeter, impact the way that the "land down under" interacts with the rest of the world?
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Iran
After reading chapter 2 in the required texts, students will discuss what it means to be both an ancient kingdom and a modern oil-based powerhouse, surrounded by mountains and desert.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Saudi Arabia
We will discuss chapter 3 in the book, and try to understand the power of and challenges to Saudi Arabia. How can the kingdom balance the history of Arabic tribes, the role of Islam, and oil?
 Week 5
Lesson 5
The United Kingdom
Once the world's most imposing empire, the windswept island has to look to the future to determine its place in the geopolitical landscape.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Greece
Following chapter 5, we will consider the pros and cons of the physical location of Greece as it works to forge new alliances and battle old foes.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Turkey
Chapter 6 covers Turkey, and how being a piece of "prime real estate" impacts the country's past and future.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
The Sahel
Chapter 7 details the expansive region that marks the transition from the Sahara Desert to the African Savannah. It is home to some of the most unstable governments in the world. What does that mean for those countries, and for the world?
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Ethiopia
Ethiopia may have seen the first humans. Now, it is working to capitalize on its location, its abundant water resources, and its growing population.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Spain
Chapter 9 provides a window into Spain's past and present. The geography of the country makes it seem like a giant fortress, but Spain struggles to unify its many regions. What does that mean for the country today and in the future?
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Space
If space is the final frontier, what does that mean for geopolitics on earth?
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Concluding discussion
Students will analyze the author's thesis, and determine how fully they agree with his premise, and make some predictions about the future.
  • Students will develop historical interpretation skills and refine critical thinking skills.
  • Students will gain a deeper understanding of why it is important to study the way the world works.
  • Guided reading of non-fiction encourages study skills that can lead to greater reading comprehension.
  • Class discussion promotes good communication skills, and encourages appreciation for opposing viewpoints.
  • Regular exposure to world maps encourages the development of a sense of place and a greater understanding of the importance of physical geographic features.
I have a BA in Political Science, History, and Secondary Education and a MA in American Studies. A basic knowledge of world history, and familiarity with a world map are helpful but not required for success in the class. It is not necessary to take Modern Geopolitics 1 before taking Modern Geopolitics 2.
Students must have their own copy of "The Power of Geography" by Tim Marshall, widely available in multiple formats online for $3-$20.
The study of geopolitics is full of potential controversy. In my classes, I welcome civil, informed discussion based on non-biased sources.
