This is the first semester of this course. Students DO NOT need previous IEW writing experience to enroll in this class, but they DO need to have the following grammar knowledge: ▶ identify subject-verb pairs ▶ identify clauses and phrases ▶ distinguish main and dependent clauses ▶ correctly use then/than and lie/lay ▶ combine sentences with a who or which ▶identify and correctly punctuate five of the six sentence openers (#1 subject, #2 prepositional, #3 -ly, #5 clausal, and #6 vss) ▶correctly punctuate coordinate and cumulative adjectives ▶use the rules for writing numbers To ensure this class is the correct fit, please do the following BEFORE enrolling: ▶ Make sure your student has mastered the concepts in the previous Fix It! Grammar levels. Because every book in Fix It! Grammar is foundational to the book after it, ensuring your student completes the previous book or has mastered the grammar concepts presented in the former book is important. Contacting customer service at www.iew.com may help if you are not sure about placement. The lessons in this course will teach creative writing and report writing using IEW Structure and Style. Structure teaches students how to organize their thoughts before they write. Style teaches students how to engage the reader with literary devices called dress-ups and decorations in IEW. This course also incorporates Fix It! Grammar Level 3. Students watch the video lesson and complete the work each week prior to class day. This class will use GOOGLE CLASSROOM to upload all homework and receive feedback and grades. On class day, the content covered in the video lesson is reinforced and opportunities for students to share their work with peers are provided. Week 1-4 Unit 1: Key Word Outlines Unit 2: Writing from Notes Week 5-8 Unit 3: Retelling a Narrative Story Unit 3 introduces the basics of story writing, following a structure that teaches students to pull specific information from an existing story to create an outline called a Story Sequence Chart. Students then organize that information into a three-paragraph summary. The paragraphs follow the narrative sequence: the beginning (which introduces the main characters and describes the setting), the middle (in which the plot or conflict is developed), and the end (where the climax occurs, the problem is solved, and a lesson is learned). Over time, with consistent practice, students internalize the components of a well-constructed story. Weeks 9-12 Unit 4: Summarizing a Reference Unit 4 introduces students to the research process and lays the foundation for future units. Because it teaches students to summarize a single reference, it has a multitude of applications. They can use it to summarize a magazine article, a section of a textbook, or even a live lecture. Weeks 13-15 Unit 5: Writing from Pictures Unit 5 focuses on developing the skill of fluency through the asking of questions to generate ideas. It teaches students how to think better and cultivates creativity and imagination. These skills are very important ones to develop and will be used in future writing endeavors, especially when they begin to write essays and must provide their opinions in the conclusions. Stylistic techniques taught are: ly adverbs who/which clause strong verbs quality adjectives because clauses www.asia clauses #1 opener #2 opener #3 opener Students who take online classes with Mrs. Brown benefit in four ways: 1. With engaging instruction from a certified IEW instructor, students receive live teaching that reinforces and provides added insight into the video instruction. 2. Through the live classes, students benefit from lively interaction with other students while receiving direction and accountability for composition assignments. 3. Learners will interact with the instructor and each other through lectures, games, slides, video clips, and discussion. 4. Perhaps most importantly, students receive helpful feedback on every written composition they submit by the due date. ***REQUIRED MATERIAL: SSS 1B (6th - 8th) + Fix It!
