CLASS SYNOPSIS
    • This 5-lesson course collects all five of my other (5⭐️) poetry courses into one complete self-paced unit!
    • In this 5-lesson complete unit, students will learn introductory skills to understanding poetry by practicing their ability to deeply analyze, think abstractly, understand elements like meter, and be introduced to sonnets and limericks

OVERVIEW
    EACH LESSON WILL INCLUDE:
    • A pre-recorded video lesson broken into separate segments (skeleton notes provided)
    • Short answer and multiple choice questions integrated into the pre-recorded lesson to track student comprehension
    • Student-to-student discussion posts to practice what was learned in class
         - Instructor will initiate a post with a question

TEACHING STYLE 
    • The goal is to have student-to-student discussion and interaction
    • I will aim to facilitate conversation and pose questions that provoke deeper thought based on the central text
    • I love interacting with my students!  I will be apart of the conversation as well 😁
    • Mini-lessons will be shared to ensure all students comprehend concepts and themes
    • While students will be challenged to think deeply, their perspective will always be encouraged and celebrated. 
    • I hope that students feel as welcomed to think as they are challenged in their thinking. 

RESOURCES
    • Skeleton notes will be provided for each lesson 
    • Open-note graded quizzes will be assigned at the end of each lesson
    • An open-note graded quiz will be assigned at the end of the entire 5-lesson unit

GRADING

 SCHEDULE 

    • LESSON 1: PERCEIVING POETRY
In this introductory lesson to poetry, not only will students be able to directly comprehend the central text, (Hope is the Thing with Feathers by Emily Dickinson) they will learn key skills and approaches to understanding poetry as a whole.  
    • LESSONS 2 & 3: MASTERING METER
Poetry has a rhythm just as much as music does.  It's called meter.  We will learn all about stressed and unstressed syllables, metrical feet,  and how poets use them to create beautiful pieces of English literature!
    • LESSON 4: DISCERNING SONNETS
Poetry will often follow rules of rhyme scheme, meter, and more;  this class will learn about these structures through studying Sonnet 18 by Shakespeare
    • LESSOn 5: LEARNING LIMERICKS
Poetry will often follow rules of rhyme scheme, meter, and more;  this class will learn about these structures through studying various Sonnets.

• Students will have a well-rounded understanding of poetry as a whole and feel confident to read and comprehend it

• Students will learn how to differentiate four kinds of figurative language (metaphor, simile, symbol and hyperbole), the basic elements of poetry form (stanzas and lines), and practice skills necessary to both analysis and life in general (humility, patience, confidence, seeking understanding, self-reflection, challenging oneself)

• Students will use the class text (How Happy is the Little Stone by Emily Dickinson) to learn about the stressed, unstressed, and secondary stresses within words and how to identify them.  They will also learn about the four metrical feet of poetry (iamb, trochee, dactyl, and anapest) and how to identify them within poems. 

• Students will use the class text (Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare) to learn about the key elements of a sonnet including lines, rhyme-scheme, syllables, and meter.  They will also be challenged to comprehend a beginners understanding of the central-text itself.

• Students will use limericks to learn about their key elements and structure including tone, lines, rhyme-scheme, and meter.
