In this one time class, your student will complete two short-term memory tests and will score their results. Also, your student will have the opportunity to compare their scores to the scores of other students in class by looking at a graph that I will present in Zoom (The classwide display of students' scores will be anonymous, but your student will be able to see where each of their scores is located within the distribution of the class).

During each recall test, your student will watch a sequential presentation of 12 two-digit numbers (presented through a Zoom screenshare) and will then write down the numbers they remember seeing during a two minute time period. After the two minutes have elapsed, your student will score their recall sheet and will provide their recall score to me through direct messaging in Zoom. I want to note that the two recall tests your student will complete in class are not designed to measure their intelligence or their memory capacity. Instead, they are simply designed to measure their recall performance with a particular set of items at a particular time and place. A person's performance on a short-term memory test is always affected (to some extent) by situational factors (e.g., Are they in a good mood to concentrate?) and by task-related factors (e.g., Are they already familiar with the items they are being asked to memorize?). Of the two tests your student will complete in class, one test is designed to be more difficult than the other so that we can discuss why people tend to perform better on one task than the other.

After I present everyone's recall scores, and your student has the opportunity to compare their scores to those of other students, I will use the data to engage your student in a short lesson on factors affecting short-term memory performance. I will use my voice and the whiteboard in Zoom to deliver this lesson. I won't cover every factor that impacts short-term memory performance. Instead, I will cover a small number of selected factors that we can investigate together with the recall data gathered during class. During the lesson, I will break down our classwide data set in various ways so that your student can see multiple patterns within the recall data. I will do this to reinforce the points that I make about short-term memory during my lesson on this topic. At any point during the lesson, your student can ask me a question by typing a message in Zoom chat or by raising their hand in Zoom to speak out loud.
