Internet memes are funny and silly. Teens love them. Adults love them. I love them. Sometimes, I get lucky and stumble on a meme that tickles my inner history nerd just right- by summarizing one of the deadliest conflicts ever into "bUt ThE tReAtY oF vErSaIlLeS". This is a real social studies class, covering the real, extremely important and serious topic of WWII and its effect on the world. Each class session will be centered around a meme we will spend the duration of our meeting...
Students will trace the story of World War II from 1919-1950 Students will discuss how people like Hitler rise to power Students will define "fascism" and "Nazism" Students will develop a deeper understanding of the Holocaust Students will synthesize information into a meme as their final project.
I have a Master's Degree in Adolescent Social Studies Education as well as academic experience studying global history in the 20th century, and have first hand knowledge of how inadequate the teaching of World War II often is in public school, especially the Holocaust. Simply telling kids that "10 million Jews were killed" honestly means nothing to them. 10 million is too big a number for humans to fathom. My approach is focusing on the stories of individuals to represent larger stories, as well as the small, almost ignored events that exponentially got bigger until it was a genocide. This class has been in the making since I visited the Holocaust Exhibit in the Imperial War Museum in London. I wanted to tell the story of how exactly something like this happens so students can understand that it was not isolated and that we must constantly be on the look out for rising fascism all over the world.

We will be discussing many, many aspects of World War II, which includes genocide. We will look at first hand accounts of what happened in Concentration Camps, including the story of Eva Mozes Kor, who describes how she and her twin were experimented on. We will not gloss over topics of genocide and racism; I will not show graphic pictures from the Holocaust, but I will answer student questions honestly and accurately. We will be tracing the racism that existed in the world and Germany that led to the ultimate event of the holocaust, including stories that some students may find disturbing, including big details (gas chambers and digging one's own grave) and smaller details (Jews being forced to cut grass with their teeth for example.) We will also cover Japanese atrocities. This includes the Nanjing Massacre, also known as the "Rape of Nanjing". Thousands of women and children were killed through atrocious acts of sexual violence. Though photos exist they will not be shown. This will be isolated to Week 5. Though this is a meme class, we will never look at or create memes that poke fun at the people who were tortured and killed during this time, as is true for all of my "meme history" classes. The victim is never a joke.
Hi! My name is Melissa Quijano (she/her) and I teach classes focused on history and fashion. Whether my classes are focused on the contemporary or the past, I want students to come away with a greater understanding of their culture and themselves....
