このクラスで学べること
This is an introductory course, for students who do not have a great deal of experience with origami. Modular origami is a type of origami where geometric figures are constructed from multiple modules which are all folded the same way. For example, a cube might be constructed of 6 identical modules. Students will learn 3-dimensional geometry through the creation of modular prisms, pyramids and platonic solids. Students will have both diagrams and videos available to learn to fold the module and construct the the assigned figures. They will then share their creations, along with a brief statement about their color choices, or difficulties they encountered. They will be expected to comment on the work of others and benefit from the lessons learned by other folders. This asynchronous class will allow learners to spend as much time on constructing the figures as needed, while still having the benefit of others to share their work and ideas. Each week students will learn the geometric properties of the shapes they are folding, how to fold the module, and create a variety of structures from the module. Week 1: Basic Folding Introduction. Students will learn the basics of folding and fold a brick. Week 2: Prisms. Week 3: Antiprisms. Week 4: Pyramids. Week 5: Tetrahedron and Cube Week 6: Octahedron and Icosahedron Week 7: Dodecahedron

受講に必要なもの
Student will need access to a fair amount of square paper. Each figure takes between 3 and 12 pieces of paper, and mistakes will be made. Origami paper can be quite expensive, and is not necessary for this course. White or colored copy paper has the appropriate weight for easy folding can be cut into 3 or 4 inch squares either with a paper cutter or scissors. (The more precise the cuts, the easier it will be to fold.) Scrapbooking paper is heavier, is easily divided into 3 or 4 inch squares, and is great for artistic figures after the basic construction has been mastered.

I have 21 years of teaching experience in grades K-8. My bachelors degree is in Elementary Education from Boston University. I have a masters degree in the Psychology of the Gifted an'd Talented from the University of Connecticut, and a graduate certificate in Special Education Leadership from the University of Kansas. I hold Kansas teaching certificates in Elementary Education (K-6) and Gifted Education (K-12). I held a previous Pennsylvania teaching certificate in Middle Level Math (6-9).
My favorite part of teaching is introducing students to the beauty and wonder of mathematics. I like to share a laugh with students and connect as human beings. I thrive on seeing how children experience our world. My online classroom, like my physical classroom, is a place children can come to relax, be themselves, connect with others, and find joy and success in learning.
When not staying home because of COVID, I enjoy traveling the world with my husband and three children, visiting my parents and other family in Michigan, reading, and eating carbs!
