Welcome to Waldorfunn, where I teach children multiplication and division using a Waldorf-inspired philosophy. My style of teaching is restful, loving, and fascinating. Igniting the child's imagination and interest is critical to mathematical success and numerical mastery. As a Waldorf-inspired teacher, I nurture and engage each child through a curriculum and methodology that integrates academics and the arts. My goal is to engage the child's head, heart, and hands—or thinking, feeling, and willing—through the calming benefits of creative art and fascinating arithmetic facts. My favorite way of teaching is through storytelling and riddles because they bring all the numbers alive! Stories for younger students are drawn and inspired by classical fairy tales and moral stories, while in later ages, storytelling takes more of the form of word problems or riddles to solve. Using storytelling to teach arithmetics of mathematics increases concentration and academic retention. A lively story that connects to real-life events, artful drawings, and hands-on activities engages the child's curiosity and enthusiasm. We will practice essential mathematical concepts of arithmetic, fractions, percentages, and more to find solutions to life problems that can be used every day. Sketching the math facts will deepen the child's retention of the curriculum. Stories also help the child retain the teaching and easily recall the necessary notions when needed. Drawing the story helps the child focus, relax, and enjoy math. Math simply makes sense when applied to real-life events! All that in a simple, fulfilling, and joyful class. At Waldorfunn schools, each tutoring class begins with a deep breath. We light a candle and say a verse to set ourselves up for a beautiful learning experience. Similarly, each class ends with a gratitude moment, a closing song, and a farewell goodbye. Here is a chronological breakdown of my expertise. This syllabus recommends the number of classes and appropriate developmental age a student will need to master the topic. ----- Addition (Recommended for ages 6 to 8) 1. The concept of adding and setting up the story. 2. Anatomy of an addition and review of the concept of adding. 3. Writing horizontal number sentence 4. Vertical Addition 5. Place value and adding with two digits 6. Practicing two digits vertical addition with carryover 7. Practicing three digits vertical addition with and without carryover Subtraction (Recommended for ages 6 to 8) 1. The concept of subtracting and setting up the story. 2. Anatomy of a subtraction and review of the concept of subtracting. 3. Writing take-away horizontal number sentences. 4. Writing vertical subtraction equations. 5. Place value and subtraction with two digits. 6. Practicing two digits vertical subtraction with borrowing 7. Practicing 3-digit vertical subtractions with and without borrowing. Multiplication times tables (Recommended for ages 6 to 9) 1. Learning skip counting and memorization of times tables. ( 1 to 15 classes are recommended) Introduction to Multiplication ( Recommended for ages 7 to 9) 1. Introduction to the concept of multiplication, in comparison with addition, and setting up the story scene. 2. Anatomy of multiplication and review of the concept of multiplying. 3. Writing horizontal and vertical multiplication equations Practicing different ways of multiplying with the same number sum and mostly one digit multiplicand and multiplier. ( 2 to 3 classes are recommended) Introduction to Division ( Recommended for ages 7 to 9) 1. Introduction to the concept of division, in comparison with subtraction and multiplication, and setting up the story scene. 2. Anatomy of a division and review of the concept of dividing. 3. Writing horizontal and vertical division equations 4. Practicing different ways of dividing with the same number of digit dividends and mostly one-digit quotient and divisor. ( 2 to 3 classes are recommended) Advance Multiplication ( Recommended for ages 8 to 12) 1. Going beyond the 12 times table. 2. Learning mental tricks to find the products of 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18,19 and 20 times table. 3. Learning vertical multiplication with 2 digits multiplicand and multiplier. ( This can be understandably tricky for children to understand) 4. Practicing some more vertical multiplication with 3 to 4 digits multiplier and multiplicand ( 2 to 3 classes are recommended) Advance division ( Recommended for ages 8 to 12) 1. Going beyond the 12 times table and reversing the thinking to divisions. 2. Learning mental tricks to find factors of the products of 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18,19, and 20 times tables. Practicing reverse thinking to apply it to division. …This comes in handy! 3. Learning the process and method of division with one-digit divisor and no reminder. ( 2 to 3 classes are recommended) * This can be understandably tricky for children to understand. 4. Practicing the division method with 3 to 4 digits divisor, long dividends, and no reminder ( 3 to 4 classes are recommended) *THE FAMOUS LONG DIVISION… We make it short here at Waldorfunn… 5. Introducing and practicing the reminder concept with one-digit, two-digit, three-digit dividend, and divisor numbers. ( 2 to 3 classes are recommended) Decimal ( Recommended for ages 9 to 13) 1. Introduction to the concept of decimal with revision of place values while setting up the story scene 2. Understanding equivalence and conversion of decimal and base 10 fractions. 3. Learning and practicing decimal additions with many fractional numbers. 4. Learning and practicing decimal subtraction with many factional numbers. 5. Learning and practicing decimal multiplications ( 2 classes are recommended) 6. Learning and practicing decimal divisions ( 2 to 4 classes is recommended) Fractions (Recommended for ages 7 to 9) 1. Introduction to the fraction world and setting up the storylines. 2. Anatomy of a fraction 3. Equivalent fractions 4. Proper and improper fractions 5. Beginner adding and subtracting fractions Advance Fractions 1. Remembering all about fractions and setting up the story. 2. Adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators ( 3 to 4 classes are recommended if the child needs a review of times tables from 1 to 12) 3. Multiplying fractions ( 3 to 4 classes are recommended; this is a tricky concept but with easy calculations) 4. Dividing fractions ( 3 to 4 classes are recommended; this is a very tricky concept but somewhat easy calculations) Percentage Recommended for ages 10 to 14) 1. Introduction to percentage, its meaning, and purpose. 2. Practice the four processes of mathematics ( addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to percentage. 3. Application of percentages to solve world problems. ( 4 to 5 classes are recommended) Mathematical conversion Recommended for ages 9 to 13) 1. Converting percentages to fractions and decimals. 2. Converting fractions to decimals and percentages. 3. Converting decimals to fractions and percentages. Introduction to Geometry (Recommended for ages 7 to 9) 1. Introduction to the quadrilateral family and setting up the storylines. 2. Hand drawing the form and learning why they have that name! 3. Introduction to the triangle family and setting up the storylines 4. Hand drawing the form and learning why they have that name! 5. Introduction to the circle polygon family and setting up the storylines. 6. Hand drawing the form and learning why they have that name! Advance geometry ( Recommended for ages 9 to 14) 1.
