In this one-time class, learners will be learning about comparing numbers, reading temperature, recording data in a table and money using an interactive pretend grocery store game! At the beginning of class, the learners and teacher will have an introductory discussion about food and where it comes from. Some discussion questions may include: “Where does the food in your pantry come from?”, “How does food get to the grocery store or onto the shelves?”, “Is the food at the store free?”, “Do we know how much it costs?”. Visuals and pictures of different grocery stores will be used in class. Next, learners will begin their grocery store learning experience by comparing numbers in different parts of the store. They will learn what it means to compare numbers, and they will be introduced to the math terms “greater than”, “equal to” and “less than”. Learners will understand the purpose of an express checkout lane or the “12 items or less” lane. Learners will work together to figure out if the customers in the grocery store have to go to a “regular” lane or if they can go to the “express” lane. Then, learners will work together to determine if products within the grocery store are “greater than”, “less than” or “equal to” a certain amount. Some simple addition may be required to complete this task. For example: “A customer wants to buy one yogurt for 20 cents and one bag of peanuts for 10 cents. Which item costs more? If the customer has 40 cents, does he have enough to purchase both items?” Finally, learners will take on the role of different department managers within the grocery store, such as the frozen manager, the dairy manager, the produce manager, and the deli manager. In each role, learners, acting as the manager, will have to correctly read the temperature of refrigerators, coolers, and freezers within each department. Learners will Then we will write these temperatures in a table and then analyze this data to determine if everything is at the correct temperatures or if they need to call a repairman. Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, help the students to relate to the lesson, and introduce each topic within the lesson. Some questions may include, “Where do you go when you’re done shopping?”, “Where can you find food within the grocery store?”, “How does the store keep the food hot or cold or frozen?” This class is best for any student ages 6 to 8, or 1st to 2nd grade. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
