This class strikes the perfect balance between keeping learning fun and curiousity alive, while also working toward getting middle school learners "high school science ready"! This is a hands-on, and rigourous ongoing middle school science course which will meet once per week. This course covers the topics found in the 2nd semester of a 7th grade science curriculum (however 5th-8th graders are welcome to join and students can "drop in" at any point in the course). I also have a separate, ongoing 1st-semester-topics course that can be taken before or after this one. Both courses are based on national science standards and include many hands-on, fun activities and labs! I enjoy teaching with humor and as much engagement as possible.

*Please note that I also have this class available as a flex (pre-recorded) option. Contact me for details.

Course Structure:

1.	There will be 1 live meeting per week. There will be periodic breaks for holidays, etc. Learners can join and leave at any point in the course and will only be charged for the weeks enrolled.
2. Class interaction will occur during live classes (discussion and games) and also within the Outschool Classroom between classes. I want to get to know the learners, and I want them to get to know each other!
3.	Optional homework or projects will be assigned in the Outschool Classroom and can be turned in within the classroom, or they can be sent to me in a private message. Some projects/labs we will do together as a class while others will be done independently. All work turned in will be given feedback and a grade.
4.	Activities will consist of: Nearpod interactive activity slides, projects such as foldables (kept in a science notebook), labs, and other hands-on activities.

Doing the hands-on portion of the labs is not required, however it will definitely make the class more fun for learners! There are usually follow-up activities that ARE required even if the hands-on portion is not done (a lab report, post-lab questions, a nearpod activity, etc.). Often you can make substitutions for some items (or only do a portion of the lab) if it is difficult to get some of these items. I usually strive to do labs that only require items commonly found around the home.

Turning in your assignments: you can take a picture(s) of your labs/activities and either upload them to the classroom (under the appropriate week’s post), or send it to me privately through Outschool in a message.

Week 1:

Pet Behavior Show and Tell: paper, pencil, camera, your pet (if you have one)

Animal Behavior Storyboard: printer paper to print pdf, or use a graphic design program of your choice to create your storyboard

Week 2:

Invertebrates Worksheet: printer paper to print pdf, colored pencils for matching

Week 3:

Vertebrate Foldable: copy/construction/cardstock paper, colored pencils

Human Body Webquest Project: This is an ongoing project that will be due at the end of week 7. Supplies: printer paper to print 10-page pdf (or upload the pdf to a graphic design program of your choice), colored pencils

Week 4:

Pictionary: drawing paper, colored pencils

Continue Human Body Webquest

Week 5:

Blood Lab:
Plasma: corn syrup (enough to fill up half of a standard water bottle)
Red blood cells: red cinnamon candies
Platelets: round nonpareils/sprinkles
White blood cells: mini marshmallows (about 10)
Plastic water bottle
Red food coloring, if no red candies available

If you are not able to locate some of these specific candies, be creative and find something else to use as a substitute. If you can't find any red candies, I would suggest a few drops of red food coloring.

*hint: keep your corn syrup bottle for week 6!

Continue Human Body Webquest

Week 6:

*parental help will be necessary for safety reasons in this week’s lab

Lung Lab: sturdy disposable bottle (examples: 20 oz gatorade bottle, corn syrup bottle from week 5, sturdy water bottle), 2 medium-size balloons (other sizes may be ok, too), scissors/box cutter, tape (electrical tape, duct tape, packing tape, or even standard clear tape in a pinch), a parent to help with cutting the bottle

Oxygen’s Journey Storyboard: printer paper to print pdf, colored pencils, or a graphic design program to create your storyboard

Continue Human Body Webquest

Week 7:

Label the Muscles: printer paper to print pdf

Science Bingo: printer paper to print pdf

Finish Human Body Webquest

Week 8:

Human Body Dice Game: printer paper to print pdf’s, glue or tape, scissors

*Q4 SUPPLIES*

Week 1:

Rock Cycle Lab: 3 crayons (all different colors, label peeled off), carrot peeler, 3 squares of aluminum foil (about 12 inches x 12 inches), a ceramic mug filled with water, access to a microwave (or hot water from the tap), assistance from an adult for the carrot peeler

I have a BS degree in Nutrition and Food Science (pre-med track) from Florida State University. I later became a certified middle school science teacher and taught middle school science in the Florida public school system for 5 years. I have been an online ESL and science teacher for over 2 years. I'm also a "hybrid-homeschool" momma to teenagers :)
