In this 4-week, flexible scheduled class, learners will explore 4 different ecosystems through the creation and sharing of activity based learning projects. Each week learners will be provided with text and video video based content on the following ecosystems. Week 1: Hydrothermal Vents This week learners will explore the mechanisms of hydrothermal vents by creating an under sea volcano simulation. Week 2: Coral Reefs This week learners will explore coral reef growth by creating rock candy. Week 3: Kelp Forests This week learners will explore kelp forest formation while creating a model of kelp structures. Week 4: Tide Pools This week learners will explore the creatures of a tide pool and the adaptations they have to withstand this harsh habitat. Each week includes an instructional video and activity demonstration, as well as, journal questions to be shared within the classroom. Learners will interact with one another within the classroom via journal entry and project picture sharing posts. In addition, learners will asynchronously work together on a collaborative class Google Jamboard to create ecosystem models as a team.

-describe how coral reefs are formed.
-describe how hydrothermal vents fuel deep sea ecosystems.
-identify the structures of kelp.
-identify the importance of keystone species.
-identify abiotic factors that affect tide pools.
-identify key adaptations of marine organisms in relationship to their environment.

Below is a skeletal list of supplies needed to complete the course. A detailed list will be provided the week prior to the start of class. • 3-4 cups of granulated sugar • Funnel • Food coloring • 3-quart saucepan and baking dishes • 2- pieces of circular shaped hard candy about 3 cm in diameter. • 2- 16 oz mason jars
