Week 3: Measure distances using a ruler and on screen ruler tools (Part 2)
Week 4: Multi-step word problems with measurement and unit conversion (Part 1)
Week 5: Multi-step word problems with measurement and unit conversion (Part 2)

I have 5 years experience in the classroom teaching math and love to explore math in a fun way while maintaining high quality teaching practices. My experiences have helped me realize that connecting with students and engaging them deeply in an activity is the best way to help them learn. I have always been interested in maps. Video games often have the most intricate, detailed maps that are exciting to learn about. To have success in any game, students have to be able to read and navigate the map. I have taught measurement in schools for five years and spent many years playing games and navigating maps both in the virtual and real world!

学習到達目標

Students will learn how to read a map in multiple ways, including using an alphanumeric grid, cardinal directions, and measuring distance by using the map scale. While using the map, we will discuss ratios and work through multi-step word problems requiring students to measure distances on the map and convert between different units.

Hey learners!

My name is Sean and I love exploring. I believe that learning and exploring are the same things. A bad teacher makes learning boring and hard, but a good teacher (hopefully me!) makes learning an exciting adventure. I taught in schools for 5 and a half years, trying my best to make students feel excited about coming to school every day. I am confident that students learn better when they are interested in the subject and the teacher is knowledgable and passionate about their work.

Topics I love to teach on include math, nature and the outdoors, history, and really good books. It's so important to think about these things and many others with an equity lens, which means learning and talking about how many people in our world don't have a equal or fair chance to experience the same things you or I do. I love to teach, think, and talk about that as well, because I think it helps make the world a better place if we all work to improve our understanding of how our privileges shape who we are and how we experience the world.

For fun, I love to go rock climbing. It's both a mental and physical challenge, like solving a really hard maze while simultaneously doing a really hard workout. It's a great way to destress and spend quality time with others in the outdoors!
