Hey there! Let's weave a mini wall-hanging together! Weaving is a popular art form that people have turned to since, well, forever ago. It is the basic of fabric structure. Weaving is an exciting medium to teach young minds, because it enforces fine motor development and pattern recognition. It's fun, because there isn't really a wrong way to weave, once you get started! I will help my learners from start to finish with this fun project, that can be made easily from things found around the...
From this course, students will learn about the basics of weaving, and will learn how to make their own beginner-level loom from things they can find around the home (a piece of cardboard, 10 ft+ piece of string, linear objects such as shoelaces, long blades of grass, or pipe cleaners to weave into their wall art piece). Weaving enforces pattern recognition and fine motor skill development, as it asks our minds and our fingers to work together to count and tie knots.
I got my BFA from SCAD where I studied textile design and fiber arts, and took many weaving classes!
-We will need scissors! -A 10 foot long (or longer) piece of string, anything that can be pulled tight on both ends without coming apart. -Do you have any cardboard in your recycling bin? We'll need a 6 inch by 6 inch (minimum) piece of sturdy cardboard, or something flat and sturdy our learners can wrap string around. -linear objects found around the home, such as pipe-cleaners, un-used shoe laces, yarn, long blades of grass, feathers, straws - maybe you can go on an adventure around the home and see what can be found that we can turn into a unique piece of art!
Parental guidance or supervision may be encouraged, as we will need scissors to cut a piece of string that is about 10 feet long, and we will be wrapping this piece of string around a piece of cardboard (any size is okay, 6in x 6inch is suggested, so long as students can hold it comfortably) and taping it into place. When our students are finished with their 5 inch tall wall art piece, they might need some help cutting it from the loom, and tying the edges of the "warp threads" together, so their work stays in place. And don't worry, I will be here to help every step of the way, with a real time demo! Please remember that your student should be the only individual on camera; this is for student safety.
