What's the best thing about making a book? Deciding how to fill it! Learning to make your own books means you'll always have plenty of places to put your own stories, poems, artwork, mementoes and photos. Join me for a series of fun hour-long workshops to learn simple bookbinding techniques and make your own beautiful non-traditional books - then fill them with whatever you imagine! In this introductory class, we'll start simple: I'll teach students to make 8-page mini books using only one...
I've been making books since I was a child, and teaching kids to make books for more than 20 years. I pride myself on offering clear instruction and tricks to help kids not just make these books with me online, but make them on their own later on!
MATERIALS LIST: (Those with an *asterisk* in front, you must have available for class. Others are optional) -PENCIL -PAPER: * -8 to 10 sheets of the *same size* paper, either 8.5"x11" (copy/printer paper) or 9"x12" (most standard construction paper). It can be the same or different colors; but having more than one color available provides more visual interest. However, using all one color is ok - you can always decorate it later. (A NOTE ON CONSTRUCTION PAPER: cheaper construction paper with a very fibrous feel tends to fold very poorly and create less-than-satisfying results. I recommend using Tru-Ray construction paper, by Pacon, but you can of course try with whatever you have.) *-Scissors *-Something to use as a folding tool to make extra sharp creases - I suggest a popsicle/craft stick, but if you don't have one, you can provide a ruler, or a butter knife (as long as it's not serrated!! The edge needs to be completely smooth and blunt!). *-Rubber bands - at least three or four of them, all the same size. They should ideally be thin and not too long (you don't want thick/wide ones for this; they don't work as well). If you're a rubber-band-less household, #19 are a decent size to buy to have around. *-A glue stick (if you are glue stick shopping, in general I always recommend the large size, 1.27oz, any brand, preferably not the kind that goes on purple. The larger ones have better coverage, and last much longer). Whichever kind or size you have - if it's not a brand new glue stick, please check before class to make sure it's not sticky or dried out! *-Scrap paper to protect the table while using the glue stick! Examples of good paper to use as scrap: junk mail or catalogs; used copy paper; glossy newspaper circulars. (Note, do NOT use regular newspaper - the print rubs off on hands and books!) OPTIONAL MATERIALS LIST, for continuing to work after class is over: -I like to give kids larger paper to work with after we've practiced the smaller books, because larger paper creates bigger pages and more space to write and draw! We will just work with the standard size paper during class, but to make larger-scale books with bigger pages after class is over, you'll want to have 11"x17" (copy/printer paper) or 12"x18" (construction paper). Again, I recommend Tru-Ray by Pacon if you're using construction paper. -Some colored/decorative paper scraps - optional, but can make decorating more fun. -Pencils and/or markers to start writing and drawing -Washi decorative tape -Stickers or other embellishments
