Class will begin with an introduction to the book titled "Summertime in the Big Woods", including a definition and identification of the following literary terms: setting, characters, title, illustrator, author. Students will be encouraged to listen closely for the differences observed in the lives of the pioneers of the 1800's compared with our own lives today. The teacher will read each page aloud, discussing the illustrations and asking open-ended questions about the events in the story. Each student will be encouraged to share insights and experiences gleaned from listening to the story. The teacher will provide discussion points and use props related to the story to prompt students in evaluating the story and its historical value. Students will be encouraged to share and show one toy or game and tell why it is different from toys and games of the pioneer days.

If the topic of racism toward Native Americans arises in discussion of this book, I will explain that discriminatory attitudes that happened toward Native Americans in the 1800's does not align with how we view people of varying backgrounds today. We will discuss encouraging ways to appreciate all of the different people groups in our world.

As a 20-Year Veteran Homeschool Teacher and mom, I highly value the socialization piece that needs to be a vital part of any homeschool or remote learning experience. In these hangouts, we make friends who are also homeschooling or learning remotely.
Teaching is my passion, as I have taught in many forums: public school, Christian school, homeschool, and in online education as well. As a home-educator of over 18 years, I taught all 7 of my children how to read with fluency starting at 4 years old and homeschooled them from preschool into college!
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with specialization in Learning Disabilities. I am a certified TESOL teacher for speakers of other languages.
