With a flipped classroom approach, this four week class will teach learners about the first permanent European colonies in America. Each week we will look at information about a specific colony prior to our time together. During our class time we will have a short review of highlights and important facts that stood out from the resources. Learners will then create 2-3 Google Slides highlighting information they learned about the colony of study. In order to learn from each other, time will be given to learners to share what they highlighted on their slides. Once the learners have shared their knowledge with each other I will present a few slides that contain information about the colonies and point out some interesting facts on the websites the learners were using for research. The websites chosen are from the National Park Service, Britannica or a historical site dedicated to preserving the history of a specific location.

Each week a new colony will be the topic of study. Our time period content contains information on minority groups who were denied equal freedoms including Native American tribes, enslaved people and women. These historical perspectives are mentioned in the resources and will be addressed with each colony as each colony faced unique situations. Different Native American tribes were impacted by the different colonial groups and these differences will be covered in our study. Women, people of different races and different countries of origin faced specific hardships that are part of this course.

Please see below for the different colonies that will be covered in this course. Come join our colonial adventure and glean new knowledge!

Week 1: Jamestown
Resources and content will all center on this colony for week one.
Week 2: Plymouth/Massachusetts Bay Colony
Resources and content will all center on this colony for week two.
Week 3: New Amsterdam/New York
Resources and content will all center on this colony for week three.
Week 4: Pennsylvania Colony and Philadelphia
Resources and content will all center on this colony for week four.
