Our book club includes books that tackle complex and sometimes controversial topics such as violence, racism, profanity, witchcraft, gender identity, and various religious perspectives. We encourage families to research the selected books beforehand to ensure they are comfortable with the material for their child.
As the facilitator of this book club, I will guide discussions on these sensitive subjects, helping the students use critical thinking and contextual analysis.
Reading and discussing diverse books is essential for several reasons:
Promotes Empathy: Exposure to different perspectives helps teens develop empathy by understanding the experiences and viewpoints of people from various backgrounds and identities.
Encourages Critical Thinking: Analyzing complex topics in literature helps students hone their critical thinking skills, enabling them to question and evaluate the information they encounter in their daily lives.
Fosters Inclusion: Engaging with stories from diverse voices can combat stereotypes and prejudice, promoting a more inclusive and accepting mindset.
Supports Personal Growth: Teens learn to navigate and articulate their thoughts on challenging subjects, which aids in their personal and emotional development.
Enhances Awareness: Understanding historical and current social issues through literature can help students become informed and engaged citizens.
Our club is committed to being a safe space for all participants. It is essential that members of our book club treat each other with respect and without bias or prejudice. This includes respecting all aspects of diversity, such as race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and gender identity. Our open and inclusive community is our greatest strength, and we strive to ensure it remains a supportive environment for everyone.

教師の専門知識と資格
As a special education teacher (in-training!), I specialize in teaching life skills to students with a wide range of disabilities, from mild to moderate. My approach is grounded in research-based intervention strategies, including positive behavior intervention and supports, multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), applied behavior analysis, and culturally responsive practices. I firmly believe in the power of replacement behavior and reward strategies to foster growth and independence in my students. My classes will also revolve around providing a safe space for kids with disabilities and special needs to connect with others and make friends that understand that it's okay to be different, because that's what makes us unique!
I believe every child deserves care, respect, and a chance to grow holistically. Recognizing their unique backgrounds and abilities, I create an inclusive environment where they feel valued and empowered to learn at their own pace. Through hands-on experiences and interactive lessons, I spark curiosity and encourage active participation. I foster a supportive space where students can express themselves freely and build meaningful connections. By nurturing confidence and resilience, I empower students to embrace learning as a journey of continuous growth. My philosophy is rooted in nurture, individualized attention, and fun, aiming to inspire curiosity and ignite passion in every student.
As a teacher, mother, and member of a diverse community, I bring a rich and nuanced perspective to this club. My identity as a woman of color, my queer identity, my marriage to a queer non-binary person who is also a person of color, and my experiences as an autistic individual and a parent of a child with ADHD/autism deeply inform my approach to teaching and discussing diverse literature that students can relate to, no matter who they are, their culture, or their background. Here’s why my background uniquely positions me to lead this class:
Personal Experience with Diversity:
My personal experiences as a woman of color and a member of the LGBTQ+ community give me an authentic understanding of the challenges and perspectives discussed in diverse literature. I can connect with students on a personal level, providing insights and fostering discussions that are informed by real-world experiences.
Understanding and Empathy:
Having navigated multiple layers of identity, I bring a deep sense of empathy to the classroom. I understand the importance of representation and the impact of seeing oneself reflected in literature. This empathy enables me to create a safe, supportive environment where students feel comfortable exploring and discussing sensitive topics.
Commitment to Inclusive Education:
My commitment to inclusive education is rooted in my own experiences. I recognize the value of diverse voices and perspectives in fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. This commitment drives me to ensure that every student’s voice is heard and valued, and that our discussions are approached with respect and sensitivity.
Expertise in Addressing Complex Issues:
My background equips me with the skills to handle complex and sometimes controversial topics with care and thoughtfulness. I am adept at guiding discussions on sensitive subjects, helping students navigate their own responses, and promoting critical thinking and understanding. I demonstrate that diversity is a source of strength and that embracing our varied identities can lead to a more compassionate and informed perspective. My presence in the classroom underscores the importance of representation and inclusion.
Creating a Safe Space for Dialogue:
I am dedicated to creating a classroom environment where students feel safe to explore and discuss diverse perspectives. My personal and professional experiences have prepared me to facilitate meaningful conversations, address biases, and encourage open dialogue.
I aim to empower students with the tools to engage thoughtfully with diverse literature, develop empathy, and become more informed and inclusive individuals. My background and experiences make me uniquely qualified to guide these important discussions and support students in their journey of understanding and growth.
