Students in this course will learn about an important part of Black history every week through a presentation of the course material. They will be able to ask questions and be given time to discuss with students. Classes are twice a week for an hour. Class Structure- 35 Minute Power-Point Presentation 5-10 Minute Class Discussion 10-15 Minute Kahoot 5 Minute Q&A + Wrap-Up Current Discussion Topics: Class 1- Lion of Mali: Mansa Musa and West Africa Before Colonization (Topics: Pre-Colonized Africa, Mansa Musa/Mali/Timbuktu, Ghana, "But there were slaves in Africa!" Fallacy) Class 2- Coming to America: The Beginnings of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (Topics: The first African Slaves in America, Indentured Servitude, and Black Life in Colonial America) Class 3- Dud Fireworks: The Revolution and it's Relation to African-Americans (Topics: The American Revolution, The Founding Father's Hypocrisy, Black Patriots and Loyalist, and Quock Walker) Class 4- A Storm's Brewing: Antebellum America (Topics: The Antebellum Period, Nat Turner, John Brown, Frederick Douglas, Harriett Tubman, Free Black Life, The Abolitionist Movement) Class 5- Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: Civil War and Reconstruction (Topics: Abraham Lincoln, The Civil War, Black Union Soldiers, Freedom, Reconstruction, Voting Rights, HBCUs) Class 6- The New Negro and The Talented Tenth: Black Life in the Early 1900s (Topics: The Great Migration, The Harlem Renaissance, WW1, and WW2) Class 7- Keep Your Eyes on the Prize: Civil Rights and Black Life in the mid-1900s (Civil Rights Leaders, The Black Panther Party and the First Natural Hair Movement, James Baldwin, Black Entertainment) Class 8- Those With Attitude: Black Life in the 80s and 90s (Topics: The Crack-Cocaine Epidemic, The War on Drugs, Reaganomics, Rap Music) Class 9- Hashtags: Modern Day Black Life (Topics: Barack Obama, #BlackLivesMatter, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Social Media, The Second Natural Hair Movement, Cultural Appropriation, The "Racism is Over" Fallacy) Class 10- Presentations (Students will have 5 minutes to present a one-page speech or power-point presentation about one of the historical periods we learned about and how it connects to another period in history or current events. The "audience" for this presentation is someone who doesn't know much about black history.)

Students will not only know more about Black history but will be able to connect black history to current black life.
Students will gain an appreciation of Black history and culture and will be more accepting of other cultures and their differences.
Students will improve writing skills through the presentation at the end of the 5 weeks.
Students will improve communication skills by communicating with peers in discussion groups, presenting information discussed in their groups, and presenting an individual paper during the last class period.
Students will learn of the importance of the study of history and sharing historical knowledge.

We will be talking about dark parts of Black American history; including lynchings, slavery, sexual assault, police brutality, etc. Please use your own discretion when registering your student for this class and ask yourself if they would be mature enough to learn about these topics.

Additionally I minored in Education with a Social Studies focus and took multiple classes focused on teaching students about history, including deeper/darker topics.
