During this ten week long debate program students will learn the basics of argumentation, some advanced debate techniques, and participate in a mini-tournament. This class includes both the introductory and intermediate argumentation courses. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to DebateStudents will get a chance to introduce themselves to their peers, learn the fundamentals of debate, and get a chance to participate in mini-debates.Week 2Lesson 2Impact AnalysisStudents will learn how to do cost-benefit analysis and compare impacts. Afterwards they will participate in a debate game to help them internalize the lesson.Week 3Lesson 3Audience AdaptationStudents will learn how to adapt to different audiences and about different rhetorical styles to influence people. Afterwards they will participate in a debate game to help them internalize the lesson.Week 4Lesson 4Asking and Answering QuestionsStudents will learn about cross-examination and how to ask questions in order to further their arguments as well as how to effectively answer questions, even when they might not fully know the answer. Afterwards they will participate in a debate game to help them internalize the lesson.Week 5Lesson 5Mini-TournamentStudents will get right to debating in order to help bring together the four previous lessons.Week 6Lesson 6Speaking Drills & Debate FormatStudents will learn some speaking drills and activities they can do to improve their ability to speak. They will also learn about the debate format that we will be using for the remainder of the class that is modelled after policy debate.Week 7Lesson 7Disadvantages, Opportunity Costs, and ResearchStudents will learn about cost-benefit analysis, disadvantages, and counterplans, as well as how to effectively engage in research. Afterwards they will participate in a debate game to help them internalize the lesson.Week 8Lesson 8Procedural Argumentation and PhilosophyStudents will learn about how to engage in rules-based argumentation in debate as well as how philosophy can apply to both debate and politics. Afterwards they will participate in a debate game to help them internalize the lesson.Week 9Lesson 9Speaking Drills & Tournament, Day OneStudents will start with some speaking drills to get warmed up and then engage in a more formal tournament that brings everything together from the past lessons.Week 10Lesson 10Tournament, Day TwoStudents will complete the tournament and we will crown a class champion, as well as sadly say our goodbyes.
- Students will learn how to work in teams, better their research, public speaking, debate, listening, and note taking skills.

He has also run elementary and middle school debate workshops for the past four years both in the US and internationally. Debate is not necessarily for everyone, but we are confident that if your kid is excited about it they will enjoy this class, and don't want you paying if that's not the case.

Students should come with paper and something to write with. Taking notes on a computer is also entirely fine. A timer is suggested, but not required.
