As a language is so heavily informed by that country's culture, the goal of this class is to provide cultural context that is both interesting and helpful to students developing a better understanding of Japanese. Being able to read/write Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji characters is not required but an understanding of at least a basic level of Japanese grammar and/or vocabulary is recommended in order to get the most out of this class. As the theme of this 8-week course is traveling in Japan, each...
Upon completing this class, students will have: - Learned more about sightseeing/tourism in Japan, what some famous places are and what they are known for. - Learned vocabulary related to travelling in Japan and its meaning. - Practiced listening and speaking of Japanese in situational conversations (ordering food, giving directions, etc.). - Practiced expressing their opinions in Japanese, what they would want to do and why, presenting their "dream trip" to Japan.
I have studied Japanese for more than 12 years and am fluent in the language. I also am experienced in tutoring middle school, high school, as well as college students in Japanese and I have lived accumulatively in Japan for about 5 years. In terms of traveling in Japan, I have been pretty much everywhere from Okinawa to Hokkaido and even worked as a tour guide while I was living in Kyoto conducting research for my dissertation for 2 years.
All audiovisual material for class (sound/video/image) will be provided as part of PowerPoint presentations (or similar) displayed for students through use of screen share on Zoom. Students may want to have a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes in class. All "follow-up worksheets" and class supporting materials (i.e. vocabulary lists) will be provided to students by the teacher in the Classroom. For their final project, students will be asked to come up with what their "dream trip" to Japan might be, applying vocabulary and grammar learned in class, but they may do additional research using tourism/travel websites/online resources (provided by the teacher) if they wish. When presenting their "dream trip" students will be asked to provide a "poster" to show to the class while they present. This "poster" can be drawn, made digitally on the computer using pictures found on the internet, etc. however the supplies needed to complete the "poster" part of this final project will vary accordingly.
