Taught by a teacher with an MA in Jewish Studies, this ongoing class introduces students to various Jewish folk tales, stories, holidays, festivals, foods and cultural traditions. Students may join ANY week! Together, we will hear Jewish and Yiddish folk tales and stories, and learn about Jewish holidays, foods, songs, stories, and traditions. Each class will have a theme. Many classes focus on particular holidays, while some focus on other aspects of Jewish culture, such as a type of food or folktalke. Students will participate through active listening and in-class discussion. Some classes will include culturally relevant songs or music. This interactive, secular, academic and inclusive class is open to all students. No prior knowledge is required. Although this class will primarily focus on how holidays and traditions are celebrated in the United States in the Ashkenzi tradition, the class will also touch upon Israeli, Sephardic and Mizrahi traditions . After completing each class, students will have gained knowledge of that week's author, folktale type, holiday, festival or tradition. Often, classes include a brief explanation of traditional Jewish time-keeping, particularly the lunisolar Jewish calendar, and the relationship of many holidays and traditions to the agricultural cycle of the year. **In order to facilitate discussion, students should expect to keep their screens on. Students should also be prepared to share their thoughts with, and respectfully listen to, their teacher and their fellow students. Thank you!**

Many folktales and holiday related stories can include potentially disturbing or frightening topics. These include but are not limited to: fighting, battles, exile, death, birth, plagues, hanging, weapons, famine, drought, monsters, oppression, slaying of babies and children and capital punishment. Although this class does not focus on violence, themes are part of many holiday stories and folktales, and may also come up in class discussion.
This is a secular, academic and inclusive class about Jewish holidays and cultural traditions. It is NOT a religious school style class! All students are welcome. No prior knowledge is required.

I was also raised Jewish, and I taught Hebrew/religious school for several years. Outschool is a secular platform, and this class takes an academic and secular approach to all topics..
