Many children (and adults) do not like to write. They find it difficult and too much work. Writing is challenging and we never produce our best work on the first try. Children will experience plenty of pre-determined writing assignments, being told what to compose or research, throughout their educational journey. This three-week class encourages students to choose any topic that energizes them-either for or against; and develop an insightful opinion, supported by logical reasons. The fact they already have an interest in the subject will make writing easier. An opinion piece is an excellent way to engage in writing that will benefit your child’s long-term education. Asking a question, explaining why the topic matters or telling a surprising fact are great ways to introduce a topic. Well written opinions are focused with no loosely related material. The piece includes at least three reasons to support the opinion; and each justification features several supporting sentences. A variety of linking words and phrases connect the opinion and explanations, including, “For example,” and “Therefore.” An effective, engaging conclusion restates and reflects on the opinion and suggests a follow-up action or response based on what was written. Week One – • Define fact vs. opinion. • Introduce and understand the value of using a graphic organizer in English Arts. • Learn the five phases to writing: *Plan, *Draft, *Write,* Revise, *Publish. • *Plan opinion writing topic (Students are encouraged, but not required to have their topic decided by first class). • *Draft three to five reasons to support the opinion. Week Two- • *Write opinion sentence starters, including, “I think” and “The best thing about…” • *Revise the three to five reasons drafted during week one supporting the opinion. • Produce additional detail for each opinion reason used. • Apply transition phrases to writing, including, “One reason…” and “In addition..” • Select comic strip template to convert opinion writing. Week Three- • Compose an effective engaging conclusion: Restate and reflect on the opinion. • Suggest a follow up action or response based on what was written. • Use transition words/phrases, including “In Closing” In Summary” or “In the end” • Produce comic strip based on finished opinion piece ready for “*publication.”
