(UPDATE): Dear parents: Some of the families creating a new enrollment from the class listing page may see a 4% "Marketplace fee" added to your charge (public funding users are excluded from the marketplace fee). Please rest assured this surcharge is coming from Outschool, not me, and I would be happy to refund the Marketplace fee back to you if it would ensure keeping your learner(s) enrolled in my classes. (Simply contact me if you would like me to refund you the 4% fee.) It appears to be a test implementation, so it might not affect every new enrollment. The fee is added at checkout or during weekly payments for new enrollments, supporting Outschool's ongoing platform costs. Thank you, and I look forward to teaching your child(ren)!

In this highly interactive semester class, learners will learn how to speak using classical pronunciation and write the ancient language of Latin. This course combines Intro to Latin for Kids, Latin Level 1 for Kids (Ages 9 to 11), and Latin Level 2 for Kids (Ages 9 to 11) into a fourteen-week class that meets twice per week. It provides a slower-pace, in-depth experience than my 5-week and 6-week Latin classes.

Through lively discussions, vocabulary lists I will provide, visuals, optional note taking, and imitating my speaking, students will create and translate sentences relevant to their everyday world—many of them funny. Because about 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will also see how roots from Latin words in class connect with many English words they already know, plus they will increase their English vocabularies.

The material will include nouns, verbs, adjectives, three noun cases, three noun declensions, and a few high-frequency words. Each day, the learners will have ongoing opportunities to construct increasingly advanced Latin sentences using what they have learned!

I will provide each learner printable material consisting of vocabulary, some in flashcard format for optional independent review.

In addition to increasing Latin vocabulary and working with Latin roots in English, here are specifics on what students will do each week (depending on overall learner readiness and the flow of class from week to week). They also will have an ongoing opportunity to create examples of their growing mastery in the form of optional oral, written, visual, and/or kinesthetic products:

Week 1 (class meetings 1 and 2): Students will receive a brief overview of the historical and linguistic context of Latin, explore Latin numbers and months, and learn classical Latin pronunciation rules. Then, students will begin learning a few nouns and verbs, and even begin generating simple sentences.

Week 2 (class meetings 3 and 4): Students will begin using several 1st conjugation verbs with nouns to create funny Latin sentences, and build their verb repertoires.

Week 3 (class meetings 5 and 6):
Students will learn how to conjugate "regular" Latin verbs (present tense) in the 1st conjugation category using subject pronouns. They will strengthen their mastery of verb conjugations by playing a class game.

Week 4 (class meetings 7 and 8):
Students will discover prepositional phrases and use them to expand their ability to build sentences.

Week 5 (class meetings 9 and 10): Students will receive an introduction on how to use the direct object (accusative case) and apply that new knowledge as they invent more sentences.

Week 6 (class meetings 11 and 12): Students will learn about Latin noun genders, adjectives, and gender agreements and incorporate that new knowledge into sentences they create.

Week 7 (class meetings 13 and 14): Students will reinforce and practice the material they studied in weeks 1 through 6 and expand their use of the irregular verb "esse" (to be).

Week 8 (class meetings 15 and 16):
Students will discover plural nouns in the subject form (nominative case) and use them in new sentences.

Week 9 (class meetings 17 and 18):
Students will learn how to convert sentences into questions and begin answering them with yes and no statements. They will also learn how to make sentences negative. We will ask fun questions and answer them with creative variations.

Week 10 (class meetings 19 and 20):
Students will receive an introduction to 2nd conjugation verbs and use them in constructing fun sentences, questions, and answers. Depending on readiness, the students will begin to tie together and organize their learning thus far of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd noun declensions (singular forms) in the nominative, accusative, and ablative cases.

Week 11 (class meetings 21 and 22):
Students will receive an introduction to 3rd conjugation verbs and use them in constructing fun sentences, questions, and answers. Students will continue tying together and organizing their learning thus far of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd noun declensions (singular forms) in the nominative, accusative, and ablative cases.

Week 12 (class meetings 23 and 24):
Students will receive an introduction to 4th conjugation verbs and use them in constructing fun sentences, questions, and answers. Students will continue tying together and organizing their learning thus far of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd noun declensions (singular forms) in the nominative, accusative, and ablative cases.

Week 13 (class meetings 25 and 26): Students will strengthen their use of the verb "esse" (to be) as they create fun sentences and have simple conversations. They will continue to tie together and organize their learning thus far of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd noun declensions (singular forms) in the nominative, accusative, and ablative cases.

Week 14 (class meetings 27 and 28): Students will continue to apply and strengthen what they have learned by constructing fun Latin sentences and speaking Latin.

I am looking forward to seeing you!

Self-taught in Latin, I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
