米国の学年 Kindergarten - 1
This is an introductory course specially created for PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade students. The subject matter will be adapted to suit their educational and developmental level. Students will learn through a variety of approaches, such as read aloud stories, informative slides and graphics, drawing, building and sculpting, movement activities, video clips, games, discussion, repetition and more. Students will learn about a variety of geography- and map-related topics--maps and globes, orienteering, direction, map keys, symbols, topography, communities, emergency services, cities, transportation, and more. Math and science concepts are interwoven into lessons. Vocabulary words such as geography, compass rose, north/south/east/west, globes vs maps, 3D vs 2D, continents, topographical formations, orienteering and more will be introduced and used during these interactive, engaging lessons.

The weekly course topics will be:
Week 1 -- Intro to Maps: Globes vs Maps--What's the difference, and what is their purpose? What are the basic elements of a map?
Week 2 -- Me on the Map--Where am I? (mapping our homes and communities)
Week 3 -- Over the Rivers and Through the Woods: 3D Topography and Landforms
Week 4 -- Imagined Worlds -- Symbols / Mapping stories, treasure islands, and fantasy worlds
Each week will include: Lesson material presented in slides, a short video clip, a movement activity related to the weekly theme, a read-aloud, class discussion, 1-2 drawing/building/sculpting activities, and sharing. Some learning games may also be included. Students will also have the opportunity to share their optional homework assignment (from the previous class) with their fellow students.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the target age of this club, it is recommended that parents or caregivers remain close be to provide assistance and support as needed. OS policy requests that adults remain off camera as much as possible, but it is important to stay close to help with technical difficulties, emotional needs, teacher/student communication clarification, and helping hands when needed. I find that having a grown-up nearby creates the best experience for these young learners, especially those in the 4-5 year range.

ALSO: Access to a color printer is required for this class. Weekly attachments will be posted in the classroom for use during class meetings. All other supplies will be easy to find, common household or office supplies, and will be noted in the classroom prior to each weekly meeting (as well as in the "Supplies" section of this class listing).
学習到達目標
Students will learn about maps and globes, how we use them and how they are made. Students will learn about how maps can show us where to find what we need--whether walking or driving to our destination, or to learn about our own community and the wide world around us. Students will be able to identify symbols, keys, compass rose, and other important map elements, and will observe and recreate them in hands-on activities. Students will learn about the ways we are able to navigate new journeys using maps, and how we can record what we've discovered and explored by creating them on our own. Students will learn new vocabulary words related to the topic as well as interesting new facts.

No students will be required to share any personal details related to where they live. Questions and conversation related to where students live will remain general and non-compulsary.
受講に必要なもの
Access to a color printer is required to participate in this class. Students should provide their own paper, pencil, colored pencils or crayons (optional), playdough or sculpting clay, building blocks (such as lego-style bricks, duplos, bristle blocks, or wooden blocks). Paper plates, glue sticks, scissors (used with parental assistance), paint, yarn, and other common craft supplies may also be used. Some additional materials may be necessary for the optional homework assignments, but they will be simple, easily found, household items (and are not required). I am always happy to help families find an alternative material that can be adapted to use in class if any of these items are not available.

I'm so excited to share my love of exploring and making maps with you! I've been teaching STEAM topics like maps to preschool through middle school for 6 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be learning about maps, globes, and finding our way--but we'll sneak in some colors, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!
