In this single class, young learners will have a blast learning all about archaeology, dig sites, artifacts and more. This course is chock full of age-appropriate sharing and interaction! This is an introductory course, designed to be developmentally appropriate to primary learners in PreK/K/1st Grades. Students will learn about the science of archaeology and what archaeologists do. Students will be able to identify and compare different tools that archaeologists use to dig and discover artifacts. Students will practice observing and recreating a famous archeological site and artifacts. Students will learn about a broad sampling of ancient cultures we are able to study by examining their artifacts. Students will discuss famous archaeologists, both real and fictional. As we learn about archaeology together, students will also practice developing interpersonal skills, verbal communication, observation, following directions, counting and measuring, replication, color identification, and creative building, drawing and sculpting skills.
I'm excited to learn about the exciting world of archaeology with you--they are real-live treasure hunters! I've been teaching STEAM topics like this one to preschool through middle school for 6 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. I'm also a homeschooling momma of 8 years, with non-neurotypical learners at home who have taught me how to approach learning with empathy and a shared sense of wonder first and foremost. Not only will we be learning about archaeology, but we'll sneak in some colors, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!
Printable resources may be supplied in the classroom prior to the first class. Learners should have the following on hand for class: paper, pencil, markers/crayons/colored pencils, ruler, clay or playdough (homemade is fine), LEGO or DUPLO bricks--recommended but can be substituted with drawing or sculpting materials or other building blocks.
