このクラスで学べること
In this 4-session course, students learn about scientific research methods and the invention design process, exploring the connections between posing research questions and developing new products. The course sessions delve into projects created by kid scientists and inventors, as well as recent innovations by leading professionals. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to develop their own ideas in an Invention & Research Journal. One goal of the course is to inspire students to begin imagining themselves in the fields of invention and science. Session 1: Learn about the Invention Convention - supporting young inventors in grades K-12 Students are introduced to The Invention Convention, an annual competition and presentation open to grades K-12. We'll explore several of the winning projects from various age groups. Session 2: What is Graphene and how was it discovered? We'll learn the amazing story behind the unexpectedly low-tech discovery of graphene, using scotch tape! This discovery of 2-dimensional carbon led to a Nobel Prize and a slew of new innovative products and uses. Session 3: Exploring the 3M Young Scientists Challenge Students are introduced to the 3M Young Scientists Challenge (open to grades 5-8). We'll take a close look at the development process and science principles used in one of the winning 3M Young Scientists Challenge projects: SoleXTurf, a renewable alternative energy source. SoleXTurf proposes using piezoelectric materials and cholorplasts to generate electricity. Session 4: What is the Earthshot Prize? We'll learn about the new Earthshot Prize and the principles of sustainable innovation that it supports. We'll also study examples of new inventions and initiatives that address global environmental issues in a positive and inspiring way.
学習到達目標
Students will learn about:
- The invention and engineering development process
- Scientific research methods
- General guidelines for how participate in the 3M Science Challenge and the Invention Convention, with links for parents with further details if students would like to enter
- Modern engineering/product design and innovation concepts, including circular economy, carbon impact analysis and zero-waste design principles
その他の情報
受講に必要なもの
Please bring a notebook (to use as an Invention & Science Research Journal), or blank paper, and also a pencil to class. In Week 2 of the course, please also bring Scotch tape (we’ll use that to isolate graphene from the graphite in your pencil). No other special supplies are needed for the course.
