Fungi are a critical, but often overlooked component in biology. This four week introductory course will introduce students to the world of fungi. Students will learn about fungal classification, morphology, physiology and evolution. We will cover the many different types of fungi, their classification, reproduction, roles in ecology, relationship with other organisms, and human uses. Students will discover the many critical ecological functions fungi play and how to recognize them. We will examine questions such as, but not limited to: How do fungi differ from plants and animals? What important ecological roles do fungi play? Do mushrooms need sunlight? What kind symbiotic relationships can they form? What are the different fungal life cycles? What practical uses do humans have for fungi? This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through an image and video filled presentation and discussion. Students’ participation and questions are regularly encouraged. Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity. Week One - Introduction and Classification Week Two - Growth and Reproduction Week Three - Symbiotic Relationships Week Four - Fungal Ecology There is no textbook for this class. All necessary learning materials will be provided in the classroom. There are no prerequisites, just a love of learning and curiosity about biology.
