Competency to Stand Trial
This week we examine competency to stand trial or the concept that in order for a fair trial in the U.S. an individual must have the mental capacity to understand what is presently happening to them. We will discuss how this issue is raised and evaluated as well as what occurs when an individual is determined to be incompetent to stand trial.

By looking at some of the most famous insanity cases (John Hinkley Jr) as well as some of the most common misconceptions about the insanity plea (how often do you think it comes up in court?), we will cover what insanity is and what happens to those who are deemed insane.

Course mentions violent crime, mental illness, and secure psychiatric facilities which may be disturbing to some students. It is not suitable for students under 17 as we will be talking about psychotic disorders (hallucinations and delusions). Violent crime will be mentioned; however, the class primarily focuses on mental illness and legal wording. Discussions of dangerousness and mandatory treatment for those who are insane or incompetent will also be present. Please reach out if you have questions about content. I am more than happy to provide more details.
